Volunteers needed for field improvements in Lind

There are two volunteer workdays scheduled for the renovation of the Lind-Ritzville/Lamont Middle School baseball and softball fields in Lind.

Volunteers are needed to assist project coordinators on March 9 and March 16 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The grass infields for both diamonds are going to be scalped, leveled and reconditioned.

The baseball field requires additional work by putting in a new layer of sod and rolling it.

Aside from the infield work, the focus of the project is also on constructing a visitor’s dugout on the softball field. Additional tasks include repairing the backstops, creating additional out-of-play fencing with bullpens, upgrading the gravel in high traffic areas, applying stain to the wood components, relocating the plumbing of some of the sprinkler systems, and an overall quality improvement to the general appearance of the fields.

Project coordinator Tim Smith is looking for volunteers willing to do some heavy lifting and help spruce up the fields.

It has been many years since the baseball diamond has been used, Smith explained, and he hopes to complete the majority of work to the fields during the two workdays.

The Good Hope Lutheran Church members are providing a free lunch to volunteers on both Saturdays.

Smith is also looking for additional equipment to use on the workdays, including a loader tractor, small Skidsteer loader, box scraper, pallets and a variety of hand tools.

Any individual wishing to donate equipment is asked to contact Smith at 660-0965.
