Leadership program seeking applicants

The Washington Agriculture and Forestry Education Foundation is actively seeking qualified candidates for up to 24 fellowships in Class 36 of its leadership program, according to David Roseleip, president. People involved in the agriculture, forestry, fisheries or related industries are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is April 30.

Each year up to 24 people from throughout the state are selected to participate in the 18-month leadership development program, which serves to broaden skills, enrich experiences, and increase knowledge of the industry and public policy process. The mission of the program is to develop leaders for the natural resources industries, strengthening the industry, communities, and organizations in the process.

“The leadership program has made a significant difference for the industry and communities,” said Stephan Dillon, Harvest Operations Manager of Hancock Forest Management and Chairman of the AgForestry Board of Trustees. “We now have over 900 graduates who are officers in industry organizations, serve on state and local boards and commissions, and make up an impressive array of elected officials. Our graduates use their skills, confidence, and knowledge to provide active leadership to help direct their respective organizations and influence public policy.”

The Program consists of 14 seminars over the course of an 18-month period. Twelve three-day seminars focus on such topics as communication, economics, state government, media relations, social problems, the criminal justice system, the environment and health care, as well as other pertinent issues. The first year of the program features a seven-day visit to Washington, D.C., to better understand the federal government process.

During the second year, a 15-day visit to selected foreign countries provides participants with exposure to governments, economic systems, cultures, and practices that are important to international trade. In-depth discussions with top-level officials highlight the international experience.

The Washington Agriculture and Forestry Education Foundation covers the majority of the costs of the program, while participants pay a participation fee, which includes a membership in the Foundation.
