Wheat grower meeting slated at Legion

The Washington State University (WSU) Research in the Dryland Cropping Area and Adams Conservation District Wheat Growers meeting is to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the C.J. Newland American Legion Hall. This meeting is co-sponsored by WSU Extension and Adams Conservation District.

“This program, focusing on improving wheat production in Adams County, will include updates on new winter wheat varieties, improving weed control and new deep furrow drills,” said Aaron Esser, WSU Extension Agronomist.

The Adams Conservation District board member election, registration and refreshments begin at 8 a.m., and the workshop is scheduled to adjourn no later than 1:10 p.m. Pesticide credits have been requested.

The agenda will feature: “Otto and Crescent Winter Wheat Varieties and on Farm Testing Results,” by Aaron Esser. Otto is a newly released foot rot resistant Eltan winter wheat cultivar that also has stripe rust resistance. Crescent, also a new release, is a foot rot resistant club wheat that has also performed well in the dryland cropping area.

Additionally, the agenda includes Bill Schillinger, WSU Research Agronomist, who will provide a deep furrow drill development program update. Stephen Guy, WSU Extension Agronomist, is going to present “Fungicides for Stripe Rust Control: When, What, and on What Varieties.” Drew Lyon, the new WSU Endowed Chair in Small Grains Weed Science Extension and Research, will present “Elements of Weed Management in Dryland Crops.”

Mike Pumphrey, WSU Spring Wheat Breeder, will share information on “Spring Wheat Varieties and More for Dryland Agriculture,” which will focus on newly released spring wheat varieties that have shown promise in the dryland cropping region and Clearfield spring wheat variety development.

The day also includes the presentation of the sixth grade soil conservation essay awards and highlights from the Lind-Ritzville High School FFA program.

After lunch, Greg Schuler, Adams Conservation District Manager will conclude the program with a summary of the District’s projects and programs. Lunch will be provided.
