Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
Small towns across the country are struggling, some towns have and others will, for all practical matters become ghost towns, this trend has a long history and a variety of reasons. Ritzville is not immune to this trend. My family has a stake in this town, we own property, have children in school, and use the local businesses and own a small business… We are trying to live the American dream in this small community.
I understand some vocal citizens are scared of growth and can find fault in any attempt to bring economic development to our area. These are the same voices that can be heard when $5 is charged one month earlier than should have been (technically they were correct) and they see conspiracy everywhere. This reminds me of a certain in-law I have, who is always contrary just to see the response. The problem is at some point these voices need to have solutions. So to those voices; what is your solution to our declining population, declining school enrollment, declining business activity? How do you propose to revitalize our town? Is a dwindling population and the associated higher taxes what you want? Remember it is easy to throw the stones but not so easy to make the glass and put the window up.
I want to let them know what “growth” means to my family and myself. I want: all the homes in this town full of families; Schools that have a stable enrollment; A tax base that is shared by more people (where by lessoning an individuals tax burden); A population base that can support our churches, businesses, fairs, rodeos, theaters and other functions, and support our many civic groups. As I see it this might be back to the future where Ritzville has a thriving business district and population. I want to avoid the dying town syndrome that plagues many small towns across our country.
Ritzville has a lot to offer as far as location, History and architecture, but the main advantage we have is our caring and friendly citizens, I think that is called small town charm. We may be on the verge of one small step forward toward keeping this charm for our children to enjoy. Be a part of the solution; try not to be quite so contrary… the sky is not falling at least not today… my hand is out to you if you want to help.
Dennis & Mary Chamberlain, Ritzville
