Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
Zach Swanger and Ethan Melville, both seniors of Sprague High School, with the help of Sprague Horizons, a non-profit organization, coordinated and sponsored a “Hungry and Homeless” event on Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Sprague City Park.
The event raised $1,200, and proceeds will be split between the Sprague Summer Lunch Program and the Family Resource Center of Lincoln County.
Swanger and Melville pledged $100 each and along with other area students, they slept in cardboard boxes overnight in the park to help raise awareness for the homeless. Students that participated were able to receive community service hours for their efforts.
According to Swanger, “All students are required to serve at least 40 hours of community service in order to graduate.”
The Sprague Horizons Community acted as chaperones, and participants received soup for dinner, and biscuits and gravy for breakfast.
“We had a great group of kids come and stay in the park with us,” Melville added.
“We were very proud to have the support.”
Wun, Hwa and John Lee, owners of Kathy’s Market, surprised the event coordinators with a donation of soup, muffins, utensils, napkins, a huge bag of candy and a $100 check.
Swanger and Melville said they hope to promote the event for next year to include more groups to support Adams County as well as Lincoln County.
