The LRS Lady Broncos hit a few unwanted bumps during league volleyball play in the past week. The team picked up one win in three outings, starting with a loss to Colfax on Thursday, Sept. 27.
In the Colfax game the team fell in three matches, 14-25, 15-25, and 20-25.
They rebounded on Saturday to defeat Liberty in three straight, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-21.
Tuesday when they hosted Northwest Christian, things didn’t go their way and they fell in three matches, 18-25, 12-25 and 18-25.
“This match (NWC) went the completely opposite way than what I had envisioned and hoped,” said head coach Cari Galbreath. “My players let poor communication and lack of confidence get the better of them. We continue to struggle with staying disciplined in our skills. We can do some real good things but we need to be more consistent in the small and simple actions.”
Dalyn Killian had seven kills, 10 digs, four blocks and one assist in the game. Jenna Bennett had 10 assists and nine digs with one ace and one kill. Randi York provided eight digs, two kills, one ace and one assist.
Maya Wahl contributed one ace, five kills and three digs. Mallory Kessler had two blocks. Sydney Nelson finished with one ace, one assist and four blocks. Jana Mattox had two digs.
Against Liberty, the win wasn’t picture perfect.
“The very first kill of the night, our veteran Amanda Yockey came down and sprained her ankle very badly,” Galbreath said. “Luckily her teammates were able to adapt to new situations. We needed that victory and I am so glad we beat them in three.”
Bennett finished the night with 18 digs and 16 assists along with one ace and five kills. Killian had 12 digs, one assist, one block, 10 kills and three aces.
York kicked in 11 digs, four kills and four aces. Wahl had seven digs and five kills. Mattox finished with five digs.
Nelson had nine digs, three assists, two kills and one ace. Elizabeth Schofstoll had one ace. Kessler finished with an ace, three kills and one block.
The score of the Colfax match wasn’t an exact representation of the Lady Broncos’ overall play.
“At Colfax we came out playing hard and rallied,” Galbreath said. “The games seemed to be a lot closer than the score suggests. We won some good rallies and there were some great moments witnessed.”
Killian had 15 digs, one ace and seven kills. Bennett delivered eight digs, 10 assists, two kills and an ace. Yockey had seven digs and three kills.
Mattox recorded six digs while Wahl came through with seven digs and an ace.
Kessler finished with one kill, one block and three digs.
Saturday the Lady Broncos host Odessa-Harrington in Lind at 3 p.m.
This is a Pink Night match in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The LRS team has been selling pink “Dig for the Cure” shirts with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Even the OH team has purchased some of the shirts.
