Mosquito district working to control pest

Most people look forward to a nice warm summer for barbecue’s and all sorts of outdoor activities. There are a number of things that each individual can do to avoid mosquito bites:

• When possible, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors, especially when outdoors at dawn and dusk.

• Use an insect repellant containing DEET, following label instructions.

• Install or repair window and door screens.

• At least once a week, empty standing water from flowerpots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, buckets, barrels and cans. With all the rain in the last week or two, there may be water in buckets and old tires all around the house and other buildings. They need to be turned upside down and emptied.

The mosquito district is busy trying to keep up with the regular breeding areas, so if each homeowner takes charge around their own place it helps significantly. By dumping containers with water in them also leads to less insecticide used.

The larvacides used by the district are: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) and a mix of BTI and Bacillus sphaericus. Methoprene is also used occasionally. A highly refined petroleum distillate is used for pupa control. For adult control the district is using a Permethrin. The adulticide, larvacide and pupacide is the same that has been used for several years.

For questions about the products used or about mosquito control in general please contact the district office at 509-488-2661 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Adams County Mosquito District is pleased to receive public questions and comments. The district appreciates the public’s patience and encourage all to have an enjoyable summer.
