LRS athletes bring home track medals

The seven LRS track and field athletes that competed in last week’s state championships returned home with multiple ribbons and medals.

Freshman athlete Kate Schell earned the highest place on the LRS team with a fifth place finish in the 100-meter sprint. Schell also earned a seventh place finish in her other individual event, the 200-meter dash.

Schell set a new personal record in the 200 during the preliminary race on Friday, May 25. The 4x100-meter relay team of Schell, Caitlin Schoessler, Randi York and Maya Wahl, also set a new personal best time in the prelims.

The 4x100 team did not qualify for the finals and they placed 10th overall in the state. The 4x200-meter relay comprised of the same team members, did not post a fast enough time in the prelims to participate in the finals, but placed 11th in the state.

Matt Fryberger competed in three individual events at the state event and he found his way to the podium after each race. Fryberger placed seventh in the 100, sixth in the 200 and also earned a sixth place finish in the 400-meter race.

Fryberger earned a personal record in the 100 and the 200 races at the meet. The first personal record occurred in the prelims of the 100 and the second in the finals of the 200.

The success continued when Ryan Whitmore earned two eighth place finishes and also two personal records in those events. Whitmore competed in the 110-meter and the 300-meter hurdle races, and earned his first record during the prelims of the 300 hurdles.

Wahl competed in one individual event aside from running a leg of both relays. She placed 14th overall in the high jump competition.

Heidi Hennings, a freshman athlete at Ritzville High School, competed in the pole vault and made it to the podium with an eighth place finish.

110 hurdles: 8, Whitmore 16.07.

300 hurdles: 8, Whitmore 42.60.

Girls’ results

400 relay: 10, Schoessler, Wahl, York, Schell 53.74.

800 relay: 11, Schoessler, Wahl, York, Schell 1:53.94.

High jump: 14, Wahl 4-08.00.

Pole vault: 8, Hennings 7-06.
