Stripe Rust present in local winter wheat fields

I made a quick trip south of Ritzville last Monday afternoon and stripe rust could be found on susceptible varieties at low and moderate levels depending upon the field and location within a field. With the cooler damp weather this week farmers should be scouting their winter wheat for stripe rust and determining if fungicide application is required.

Varieties that are more susceptible and should be scouted sooner include Eltan, Masami, ORCF 102, ORCF 103, and Xerpha. ORCF 102 has a high level of high temperature adult plant resistance (HTAP), Eltan has a moderate level of HTAP and ORCF 103, Masami and Xerpha have a low level of HTAP. HTAP resistance is often more effective when daytime temperatures are greater than 75 degrees Fahrenheit however this varies within varieties.

Winter wheat varieties that have a greater amount of seedling and HTAP resistance and should be scouted later include Bruehl, Chukar, and Farnum.
