The Lind Elementary K-6 grade students had a Farm Day in the FFA building on Friday, March 30.
Mackenzie Ellis was faced with two projects, a senior project and a FFA officer project and decided on the Farm Day to incorporate both projects in one and to give the younger students a great day of farm related learning.
Ellis got the idea from her father, Brian, a former FFA advisor and the current principal of Lind schools. He started “Farm Days” in Ephrata, when he was the advisor there, and the project inspired Ellis to re-invent the project in Lind.
“I figured it was a great way to combine both projects,” said Ellis.
There were seven activity stations for the students to rotate through; machinery, petting zoo, frame building, planting, coloring, relay and snack.
Ellis arranged for local farmers to bring in equipment for the machinery portion. Students got to see a combine, a tractor and other equipment up close thanks to local farmers Eric Lund, James Wahl and Mike Doyle.
The younger students enjoyed the petting zoo area. Animals for the petting zoo were brought in by Ann Donaldson, Chris Olson and Donna Bittick and consisted of a variety of animals for the learning event including baby goats, a piglet, baby chickens and a pony.
The frame building station allowed each student to participate in building a wood frame using tools. The planting section allowed the students to learn about the various stages of plant growth and the importance of recycling every day items, as well as getting to plant their own pumpkin seeds.
Ellis gives credit to her fellow FFA officers and classmates that helped put on this event. “So many people played an important role in the success of this event,” said Ellis. “I couldn’t have done it without their help.”
