Sixth seed a good spot for Broncos

Finishing sixth in league play may prove to be beneficial to the Broncos. It means they play either Davenport or Reardan on Saturday in the first round of the district tournament at Mead High School at 12 p.m.

Head Coach Dustan Arlt is hungry for a win over either of those rival opponents. The Broncos split a pair of meetings with Reardan and would like to have the edge. On the other hand, they recently lost an overtime battle with Davenport by two points. Arlt and the team would not mind a chance to hand Davenport a defeat either.

They carry a bit of momentum with them after going 8-3 since the first of the year.

Saturday’s senior night game with Kettle Falls resulted in an exciting 75-37 win.

“It was a good chance to get all those seniors in,” Arlt said. “We started off a little bit slow, but finished the first and second quarters really strong. I wanted to try to get to a 30 point lead by the fourth quarter to get the seniors in. Derrick (Laird) stole the show and got the place rockin’. I think it was a memorable night for everybody. I was really hoping a shot would fall for him.”

Laird did not disappoint during his debut on the varsity roster in the fourth quarter. He took a pass into the corner and promptly lobbed it in for a three-point score that brought everyone to their feet. A short time later, Palmer Phillips dished him a pass in the paint that Laird turned into a hook shot for two points.

Jake Dewald led the team scoring with 15. Dylan Hartz added 11 points and Drew Hartz contributed nine. Brandon Knodel and Bryson O’Neill each had four. Laird and Tyler Frederick both scored five. Connor O’Neill, Colby Starring and Phillips each contributed six points.
