Season ends for Lady Tigercats

Regular season play ended for the LaCrosse-Washtucna Lady Tigercats on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Lady Tigercats ended their season on the road against Tekoa-Oakesdale and Rosalia.

“I was pleased with the end of the season,” said head coach Tim Stamper. “We had a couple of tough games to end the season, we went up and battled but fell a little short. Those teams are the top teams in the league; ranked second and third.”

In the first game of play last week, the Lady Tigercats lost to T-O by a final score of 31-75. Logan Harder stepped up to lead the team once more in points, by scoring 13 points in the game. Harder made 10 of those points in the fourth quarter.

Anne Fleming scored seven points and Alexis Hopkins sank two shots in the third quarter to earn four points for the team. Lindsey Miller scored three points in the game, while both Jena Goude and Kadie Whinery each made two points.

The Lady Tigercats played the last of their regular season games against Rosalia, ending the game with a final score of 27-57. For the final time this season, Harder led the Lady Tigercats in scoring with a total of 17 points.

Fleming and Chelsie Kneale both scored three points and Hopkins made two points. Goude and Miller each sank a free throw during the game.

Both Tekoa-Oakesdale and Rosalia played a full-court press in the first half, but backed off in the second half once they had secured the lead. The foul count stayed low in both games, keeping all of the players off the free-throw line.

The Rosalia game signaled the last basketball game for the Lady Tigercats’ two seniors, Fleming and Goude. Both girls were able to play throughout both of their last games and stayed out of foul trouble so they could end their basketball career on the court.

“I think our seniors left a little bit of blue on the floor after those games,” said head coach Tim Stamper. “They tried hard and battled throughout the games. They gave everything that they had and I’m very pleased with their effort this season.”

The Lady Tigercats ended the season with a three-point buzzer shot by Kneale, who sank the shot, and carried the team out on a positive note.

“Overall, we improved over the season and that’s what we were hoping for. We moved the ball a little more, and cut down on turnovers, which was a big deal for us. We played as good as defense as we had all year, and worked together as a team,” said Stamper.

The Lady Tigercats finished the season seventh in the league, above the Touchet Indians. Stamper hopes that the girls can play basketball this summer, either by going to a camp, or playing in a couple of tournaments.
