Saturday night revenge was sweet. The Lady Broncos delivered Davenport an upset loss, 50-41, in Gilson Gymnasium.
The win was particularly sweet, having fallen to Davenport earlier in the year, 53-37.
Head coach Randy Heidenreich knew the key to a win was containing the Davenport offense, or at least most of it. Miranda Mielke is a scoring machine and delivered 28 points Saturday for Davenport, but was frustrated many times in the second half by a swarming LRS defense.
“We had a couple of different defenses ready to go,” said head coach Randy Heidenreich. “We hoped we could get by playing man-to-man. We figured if we could shut down everybody else we would be okay.”
When Mielke drove the lane, which she seems to do at will, the Lady Broncos responded with weak side help that produced key stops in the stretch and allowed the Lady Broncos to maintain a fairly comfortable lead.
The offense also produced better results during the outing.
“Our press break is much better. We switched offenses and we’re still struggling to get into our offensive sets,” Heidenreich said. “When we did get into our offense we did great.”
Late in the game free throws were falling in for LRS when they needed them most. That was not the case earlier.
During the first half, the team made six of 14 attempts from the charity stripe. In the second half, they sank seven of 11.
Young point guard Jenna Bennett delivered some clutch plays.
“She had a few points there in that second half spurt where she was aggressive and attacking the basket,” Heidenreich said. “Whenever she takes control we do pretty well.”
Bennett led the team with 14 points. Davis Killian scored eight and Dalyn Killian added six. Kaytlin Phillips and Kallie York each scored five. Brooke Pichette contributed four points and Chelsey Heidenreich and Andrea Bennett scored three. Cathrine Hentges added two.
A lower turnover count also contributed to the win.
“I told the girls before the game that ‘15 turnovers or less, you’ll beat them,’” Heidenreich said. “We had 19 and we were able to do what we had to do to win. Being 0-5 in league is not a good start, but the win put us back in the hunt for a decent league placing.”
The Lady Broncos are now 4-6 in league play and 7-6 overall.
For the game, Davis had 10 rebounds. Jenna provided four assists and Phillips grabbed five steals.
Tuesday, the Lady Broncos battled the class of the Bi-County at Reardan. The Lady Indians won the game, 74-36.
Hentges led the team with eight points. Andrea, Davis and Heidenreich each scored six. Jenna and Dalyn each contributed three points. Brittany Ste. Marie and Pichette both scored two.
