Nelson named NFL High School Coach of the Week

LaCrosse/Washtucna football coach Jeff Nelson was presented with an award for being Coach of the Week on Monday, Nov. 21. The NFL High School Coach of the Week is sponsored by Sterling Savings Bank and focuses on rewarding coaches for their involvement with youth football.

Each week during football season, the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington State Football Coaches Association selected two football coaches to win their award. Nelson won the NFL High School Coach of the Week during the third week of football because of their 30-14 win over Odessa/Harrington.

Chad Hoeft from Sterling Savings Bank in Ritzville presented Nelson with his award during one of the PE classes he teaches at the Washtucna School. Nelson received a framed award, equipment bag, two footballs, pump, 11 practice jerseys, football clipboard, set of six cones, lanyard, whistle and 12 water bottles with straws for his football team.

Also, Nelson received $225 gift certificate to Sports Authority. The Seattle Seahawks and NFL Football Fund made a $500 donation to the LaCrosse/Washtucna football program.

Nelson is known mainly for his four back-to-back state championship titles from 2002-2005 and winning the state title in 2008 also.

He contributes his success to having good athletes, knowing the competing teams well and strong consistency throughout the years.

Nelson is also the PE teacher for grades 1-12 and teaches 11-12 grade English at Washtucna. Next football season will mark 19 years for Nelson’s career as a head coach for the LaCrosse/Washtucna football team.
