The LaCrosse-Washtucna Tigercats and union, Ore. Went on a scoring spree last Friday. The Tigercats won the eight-man battle by an impressive score of 10-4-64. The highlight of the night was Jake Aune’s 10 touchdown passes, which ties a state B-8 record.
Going into the game head coach Jeff Nelson was fairly certain the Union was going to be outmatched by his Tigercats.
His game plan included shelving the Tigercats’ potent running game and focusing on a passing attack.
At first, his theory was that taking his varsity running backs out of the mx would make it a better outing for Union.
Even so the Tigercats scored 38 points in the first quarter.
Rather than pushing for a 45-point mercy rule win, Nelson pulled his prime starters and used his younger players for most of the game’s remaining three quarters. The result was Union enjoyed more scoring success on the field than they had all season.
“I just got an email from Union thanking us for the game,” Nelson said on Tuesday. “Both teams left the field with smiles on their faces.”
For the night, Aune delivered 10 touchdown passes, completing 21 of 27 passes for 557 yards.
Austin Summers caught eight passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns.
Sam Harder had four receptions for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Sawyer Hosttler caught four passes for 144 yards and one touchdown. Caleb Hannas finished with two catches for 60 yards and one TD.
Matt Stubbs hauled in pair of passes for 20 yards and one touchdown.
The Tigercats only ran 44 plays of offense.
The ground game was very limited. Cam Ellis tallied 59 yards on eight carries.
“We were up 24-0 in the first quarter when we put the junior varsity defense in,” Nelson said. “It was fun. They (Union) had some success and they haven’t had success all year long. There was a point where the two teams cored four touchdowns in 45 seconds.”
The Tigercats return home this Thursday for senior night and the conclusion of the football season against Sunnyside Christian.
