Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887

AAUW fetes Ritzville branch for contributions

The Ritzville branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) was recently recognized at the 2011 AAUW National Convention in Washington, D.C., for achieving first place in total branch giving to the AAUW Action Fund.

Marsha Smith and Mary Nell Mason accepted the award at the 2011 AAUW-WA Leadership Conference at Central Washington University on July 30.

According to AAUW Action Fund’s website at http://aauwaction.org, “The AAUW Action Fund advances equity for women and girls through member activism and voter mobilization.

“Since 1881, AAUW has been the nation’s leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls.

“The AAUW Action Fund was established July 1, 2009, following a strategic restructuring of AAUW, the AAUW Educational Foundation, and the AAUW Leadership and Training Institute. The AAUW Action Fund supports AAUW’s continuing goal of breaking through barriers for women and girls, and it does so through member activism and voter mobilization. Both organizations have a nationwide network of nearly 100,000 members, 1,000 branches and 500 college/university institution partners.”

Ritzville area members tirelessly raise funds through the annual bazaar in December, book sales and membership dues.

Contributions by the Ritzville branch: include the AAUW Educational Foundation, AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, High School Scholars Awards to local high school students and branch scholarship to college junior in math, science, etc.

Chartered in 1950, the local group is the only branch in Adams County.

A total of 30 branches dot Washington’s landscape.

The Ritzville branch’s leadership includes Smith as president; Sherie Schafer as treasurer; Martha Heidenreich, secretary; Mason, membership chairperson; Nancy Burke, publicity; Gina Weber and Sue Nichols, program chairs; and Juanita Lyle, public policy.

Previous awards the Ritzville branch has received include a platinum level 21st Century Award for Washington State in 2005 and a gold level Futurist Award for Washington State in 2008.
