Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
The traditional community gathering at Bassett Park for the Fourth of July featured homemade treats in the potluck, a medieval/early renaissance re-creation, horseshoe tournament and more.
Several members of the Duchy of Brunico chose to remain in Washtucna after a local ‘war’ the weekend prior and present a medieval/early renaissance re-creation.
According to the organization’s website, “The Adrian Empire is dedicated to the study and re-creation of Western European culture between the Battle of Hastings (the year 1066) and the end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England (the year 1603). Our members work to re-create the arts, skills, and culture of this range of the Medieval and Renaissance eras.
“Local chapters usually meet on a monthly basis and hold tournaments of combat, archery and the arts. Occasional regional as well as two annual national ‘wars’ are also held which include both tournaments and group battle scenarios.
“At all of our events, we strive to wear period garb, set up period encampments or settings, and comport ourselves with chivalry and honor.”
The Duchy of Brunico includes Adams, Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Kittitas, Walla Walla and Yakima Counties.
Six members of the Duchy of Brunico presented the re-creation in Washtucna: Stephen Clements as Johan Jagermeister, Bethany Hiemstra as Sunniva Fairfax, Gwyneth Hiemstra as Beornia Freolic, Cassandra Loomis as Estella, Jason Smith as Aodhan MacGowan and new member Seryxai Phongsavath. Michael Hiemstra, whose persona is Sir Mathe Brakkewinde, served as narrator and explained the group’s activities, history and combat methods.
Members of the Hiemstra family as well as others serve as ministers of the Duchy of Brunico. More information about the Adrian Empire is available online at >http://www.adrianempire.org>http://www.adrianempire.org
