Car wash nets $560 for injured school administrator

Volunteers of all ages spent Saturday several hours washing cars as a fundraiser for Glenn Martin, who was in a motorcycle versus deer accident on June 20.

The effort raised about $560, and employees of Frank’s in downtown Washtucna donated their tips from the day to the effort as well.

The accident happened at 8:27 a.m. about three miles east of Washtucna on Highway 26. Martin was on his way to work.

Martin sustained injuries of six fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, broken tibia and broken ankle. Martin was transported to the Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, but due to internal bleeding he was flown to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane on June 22 by MedStar where he was admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU).

Martin’s wife, Layne, said that Glenn will likely be in ICU until the end of this week when he will be moved to a different floor.

His road to recovery will include several more days in the hospital. Surgery is planned to put a pin and plates in his broken leg.

In addition, doctors are considering removal of an accumulation of blood outside of the lung that has clotted.

Layne explained that the body will eventually absorb the blood, but it could hamper Glenn’s lung function in the long run.

Anyone wishing to send cards or flowers should contact the hospital.
