  • Age doesn't matter

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Feb 11, 2021

After writing last week’s column it occurred to me that I have been submitting this weekly blurb, well I’ve missed a few as well, since the fall of 2004 when Jake Kragt and his teammates made that great championship run. When you write a column you get a few ideas bundled in your head and once you start writing them down you start to see how many words that have piled up and before you know it you’ve got to bring it to an end. That certainly was what happened last week and t...

  • Jake from…

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Feb 4, 2021

When it comes to recognizing athletes and teams from the past, EWU goes out of its way to make sure credit is given. That is one of the things that I missed about not having a football season last fall, because former athletes and teams get their recognition on a Saturday afternoon with many being inducted into the Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame. Recently EWU football announced the all-decade team from 2000-2009. The teams were coached by Paul Wulff 2000-07 and Beau Baldwin...

  • A career from home

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jan 21, 2021

Since baseball got started in July, announcing games has changed a whole bunch. TV announcers would not travel with the team, but would do the play by play and color commentating from the home stadium. Monitors were used, similar to a computer or TV screen we would use at home. There were a few times when the announcer would lose track of the ball and then would excuse their mistake by stating they were in Seattle and not Oakland, or Houston, etc. The same thing is happening w...

  • Adjusting on the run

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jan 14, 2021

Throughout this ridiculous pandemic, we see some amazing changes taking place. The Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in a playoff game while basically doing all of their preparation online. Virtual practice is now a thing, I guess. With several coaches and players on COVID protocol, new players were signed. Quarterback Baker Mayfield introduced himself to backup linemen in the locker room before the team went out for warm ups. Maybe that’s the key to this c...

  • For what it's worth

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jan 7, 2021

A few weeks ago I was listening to a sports radio program that was focusing on the career of Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson. The host was doing some comparisons to Drew Brees and Tom Brady. He was telling his audience how Wilson would need to play until he was in his 40’s and throw more passes to be in the same statistical league with the two future hall of famers. What he was getting to was what Wilson would need to be to also be considered for the NFL Hall of...

  • Seasonal Adjustment

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Dec 3, 2020

Thanksgiving weekend is usually the time that we get to watch big tournaments in Hawaii and other venues where big time college basketball players are on display for the entire world to see from early morning until late at night. It is also the time when huge football rivalries around the nation are played on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There were a few rivalry games played, but instead of the season coming to a close a few more weeks are still scheduled, but with C-19...

  • Near…what?

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Nov 25, 2020

There is an old saying that news travels fast. But it seems that bad news travels even faster with no brakes. Today’s subject is, of course, the wedding. We first heard about it as a Facebook post. The ‘Ritzville Wedding’ was all the rage. But the questions most asked were: Who got married? Where was it at? Did you get invited? We all now know that the wedding was ‘near’ Ritzville, as in about 20 miles near our little burg. Twenty miles is a fair distance isn’t it? I recei...

  • Can you hear me now?

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Nov 19, 2020

Every so often I get a message from someone that likes my column, or thought I missed the point about a certain subject. When I get these I think, “Well at least they are reading it.” Last Thursday I had a message on the answering machine from a long time Cougar fan. We’ll call him ‘Cougar Mike’. Anyway, Cougar Mike said that he had read my column but the thing he was asking me about wasn’t about the football team, but why when there aren’t any fans in the stands do the...

  • It does matter

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Nov 12, 2020

I’m sure that most of you have seen the beer commercial that has one guy bringing a beer to his buddy, and one for him. There is a football game that is shown on the TV. The beer tender asks his buddy, “Whose playing?” The buddy opens the beer and says, “Does it matter?” And the beer tender opens his beer and says, “Nope.” We all can understand this completely during this time of C-19. Even I was looking forward to watching a football game — any game —as long as there was...

  • Long time for a short season

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Nov 5, 2020

It was definitely a season like no other, battling C-19 and a shortened 60-game schedule. The Los Angeles Dodgers survived the first 16-team baseball tournament played in a sort of bubble, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. Los Angeles is now home to the Dodgers and the Lakers that won the NBA championship a few weeks ago, as the city of two world champions. Had Tampa been victorious, they would have joined the Tampa Bay Lightning winners of the NHL Stanley Cup. But I...

  • Plenty of Seats Available

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Oct 27, 2020

We have finished week 7 of NCAA college football, and teams like Army have played seven games, and the Big 10 and Mountain West Conference (MWC) have played their first. Several teams have had games postponed because of C-19, so sitting out 20-plus days is starting to be a normal thing. The Pac 12 will get under way in a little over a week, just in time to enjoy the change in weather. If you’ve watched any of the games at the collegiate or pro level you can see which states h...

  • Pace Yourself

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Oct 9, 2020

It has been difficult to get excited about watching football on TV. I know that I said I would be a fan and watch, but if the team that you really support isn’t playing then it makes it tough to want to get to know teams that are playing 1000 miles away. Think back a year ago. On September 30, 2019 I was in Cheney watching the Eagles play North Dakota. Well let’s just say I was doing my best to watch the game since snow was blowing directly into my face. It was a cold, wet...

  • Best Effort

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Oct 1, 2020

We often hear of famous people who have passed away, but if we weren’t around when they were famous, those names really don’t mean much. We all know who LeBron James, Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Russell Wilson and Tom Brady are, and why they are talked about as having greatness. We are barraged with highlights from ESPN, FOX Sports, MLB, NFL and NBA networks. People much younger than me have gaming devices that highlight these athletes and their talent. But will you, as an in...

  • The Bandwagon

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Sep 24, 2020

This has been a very crazy year, to say the least. A lot of people can’t wait for the elections to be over, or for the calendar to turn over to 2021. I’m hoping to get to Thanksgiving in order to look back and really examine what I’m thankful for. I’ve watched some of the burning down of American cities and have witnessed the movement to either defund the police or eliminate it all together. I’ve also heard talk on the campaign trail that one side would like to get rid of gu...

  • The COVID-19 Puzzle

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Sep 2, 2020

Throughout this whole weird situation that we’ve been stuck with, having things to keep one occupied has been important. My wife and I have spent a lot of time outside. I believe that I explained the importance of breathing in fresh air to our well-being. We never felt that being stuck inside for prolonged periods of time was a winning option. I discovered some antique equipment that had been part of my grandfather’s farm and some of it was okay as is; as is being an old met...

  • Playing for the crowd

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Aug 13, 2020

I’m not sure where to start, or if it even matters anymore. For those of you keeping track, the Stanley Cup playoffs are on the air. The NBA is playing their games in Florida. They will be entering the playoffs soon but since I haven’t been paying that much attention to it as usual…oh well. The NFL is getting ready to gear up and start practicing but then a fair amount of players have decided to be safe and take a year off. So what would you do with a year off? Depen...

  • Long, strange trip

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Aug 6, 2020

It seems forever ago when the state basketball tournament played out in Spokane. Sure, we were aware of the C-19, but felt pretty good since there were a couple of guys disinfecting the rest rooms on a very timely basis. And for once, everyone was washing their hands after doing their business. There were no masks being worn and social distancing had not become the norm yet and there were no reported cases of the dreaded virus after the four-day fun fest. Now we are wearing...

  • The Boys of Summer

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jul 23, 2020

We are almost there. Baseball is back starting Thursday, for a 60-game shortened season. Some of us remember the strike shortened season of 1994 when there was no World Series. That was also the season that the Mariners got on a roll and everyone thought that they had what it takes to get their first shot at a playoff spot. But it was also the season when tiles started falling from the Kingdome ceiling, making it very dangerous to play there. If the season would have...
