  • Bigger than the game

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Aug 9, 2022

By Dale Anderson Contributor Anytime we hear about a death of someone in the sports world sadness is the first thing we all think about. Last week we lost two within a couple of days Bill Russell was 88 and Vin Scully at the age of 94. Death is going to happen to all of us we have no other choices but doing something good with your life for as long as you can, should be the goal. These two gentlemen gave it their all and were respected for it. Bill Russell was recruited by...

  • Follow the money

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Aug 3, 2022

It’s harvest time again and I look at all of the huge equipment that works hard to get the crop into the grain elevators. This past weekend I was reading a bit of history that my uncle wrote about the family farm, my mom’s dad’s place. He wrote about the work that was involved to get the crop planted using horses. He also talked about harvesting with a 9 foot header. My neighbor’s combine header is 40 feet. Anyway going from a header to a pull type combine with a 14 foot he...

  • Mea Culpa

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Aug 3, 2022

The first thing I need to do is apologize for something I said in the column last week about Root Sports. Evidently the information I received second or third hand was not right. Root has not been purchased by another satellite provider. It seems that the provider that we have chosen has not been able to come to terms with Root Sports. I want to say that I am sorry for the confusion and misinformation that I put in the column a week ago. But if that is the worst thing I did...

  • Didn't see much of it

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jul 21, 2022

Normally I would have written a story or two about the Mariners season by now but I have only been able to watch one game thus far. Why? Well like many of you we had Root Sports to follow the Emerald City nine but that is no longer the case. The television provider that we have no longer gets Root Sports. The provider that we once had purchased Root Sports, I’m sure figuring that we were going to change providers just to see Seattle baseball. In the words of Dan Carvey when h...

  • Two more reasons

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jul 14, 2022

It’s amazing when a person retires and there is a holiday. When I was working I really looked forward to having the day off but when you’re retired it is seemingly just another day like all of the others except that some businesses are closed and the mail will be a day late. But that’s okay I’ve adapted quite nicely anyway. You most likely heard the bombshell that UCLA and USC will be headed to the Big Ten in a couple of years. The payout for the two schools will be $80 mil...

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Supreme Court ruled this morning, Monday, June 27, that a football coach can lead a moment of silence as well as on the field after the conclusion of a game. The court ruled, 6-3, in favor of former Bremerton Coach Joseph Kennedy, who challenged his firing. The court found the Bremerton School District violated Kennedy’s religious freedom when it ordered him to stop leading a moment of silence on the 50-yard line and when it fired the coach for refusing to obey. Players and others joined Ken...

  • Going home

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jun 28, 2022

After 30 years working in the Ritzville School District as a PE and Health teacher, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, Greg Whitmore will be the next Superintendent at the Entiat School District. In other words Greg Whitmore is going home. Greg was also an Executive Board member for the WIAA and served as board president in 2019-2020. I’m sure most years were much easier to contend with but starting March 16, 2020, school and sports were put on hiatus. Meetings were n...

  • Eagle coaches return

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jun 23, 2022

Last week the EWU Eagle coaches came to Ritzville for golf and steak dinner hosted by the Ritzville Lions Club. This event has been going on for a long time and we only missed the June 2020 get together due to C-19. We all wanted to hold the event but higher powers said no way so it didn’t happen. The last time that I participated was 2019 and I believe that it was also the last time I golfed. It was great to visit with the new EWU coaches and there are a bunch of them. C...

    Roger Harnack, The Journal|Updated Jun 22, 2022

LIND – With names like "General Lee," "Let's Go Branden" and "The Bandit," politics were on full-display Saturday along state Highway 21. Dozens of "Trump Country," Trump 2024" and patriotic flags flew along the highway as motorists honked and waved entering town. Anti-President Joe Biden flags waved from high atop farm combines, pickups and campers. But it wasn't the anti-Biden sentiment that brought thousands of people to town, it was the 33rd annual running of the Lind C...

  • Good news week

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jun 16, 2022

There was some good news that we heard last week if you happen to be a Zag fan. Three starters are returning to Spokane to play for the 2022-23 Bulldog team. Yes, Rashir Bolton, Julian Strawther and Drew Timme will be wearing a Gonzaga basketball uniform again next season. Originally all five starters declared for the NBA draft but they had until June 1st to decide if their name was going to be submitted to the draft. So they worked out with teams and talked with others and...
