I’m the kind of guy that enjoys sports and I appreciate the athleticism that is displayed. There is a lot of time and effort that goes into a successful athlete and team. It isn’t just talent that makes a great player. There is also a great deal of mental toughness as well. The investment an athlete makes to improve their strength, size and speed can pay dividends in the long run. For most of us older folks we weren’t fortunate enough to have much of a weight room or even...

On Saturday in Lincoln, Nebraska the Cornhuskers battled Georgia Southern and would have a 4th quarter lead until the Eagles scored with 2:29 remaining in the game plenty of time for Nebraska to score. Nebraska drove and would set up a 52 yard field goal with only seconds left on the clock. The kick was far enough but it hooked to the left and the Nebraska Cornhuskers would lose another one score game. The pain on Coach Scott Frost’s face truly was one that said, “I’m not g...

I was certainly in my element this weekend as high school and college football took off with a full slate of games. On Friday night the Broncos hosted the Colfax Bulldogs in a Northeast 2B opener. There was a time when you had a chance to play a nonleague opponent to test how good the team was but the schedule is what it is. And each year it rotates so the last team you played in the previous season is now the first team you play this season. Colfax is a well-coached team and...

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had read some history about my mom’s family. It is interesting to envision how life was over 100 years ago. Life was certainly not easy especially travel and the comfort of riding in a vehicle with A/C in the summer and heat in the winter was non-existent. I would have to say that those relatives that went before us were certainly a lot tougher than we have become. When I read the family history I saw that my great grandparents and great u...

There is something in the air this time of year. The baseball season is heating up, pro football is starting its preseason, college football has been practicing for a week and the Washington high school football teams are practicing for the first time today (Wednesday). For baseball the excitement for the most part is in the wild card races. A majority of the first place teams are running away with their division titles by double digit games. But the wild card races make...

When Brendan Bermea applied to teach social studies at Lind-Ritzville middle school, he didn’t expect to become the high school’s head football coach. Last spring, Bermea talked to Greg Whitmore (long-time football coach and athletic director at Ritzville) about filling an assistant coaching slot. That was the expectation. But after Whitmore accepted a job in Entiat, Bermea was offered the head-coaching assignment. “When someone calls and asks … sometimes you just have to...
