  • Lind-Ritzville/Sprague advances to state

    Teren Kowatsch, The Journal|Updated Nov 3, 2022

COLFAX – The path was simple for Lind-Ritzville/Sprague on Nov. 3: Win two games and you go to state, lose once and you're eliminated. Win was exactly what the Broncos did – defeating the Northwest Christian (Colbert) Crusaders in three sets to advance to the consolation bracket final, then beating the Upper Columbia Academy Lions in four closely-contested sets to punch their ticket to state. The first set of Thursday, Nov. 3, for Lind-Ritzville/Sprague was relatively easy; th...

  • Purposeful

    Dale Anderson|Updated Nov 1, 2022

As the college football season continues into the last third of the season you can see how fortunes have changed for some teams. My Eastern Eagles have fallen on hard times as several injuries have led to young players getting playing time and valuable experience. However, with the inexperience and youth factor it has meant a fair amount of missed blocks and tackles and some opponents have looked like All-Americans. Case in point, on Saturday the Portland State QB juked and ra...

  • Long game ended too soon

    Dale Anderson|Updated Oct 25, 2022

It was quite the season that the Seattle Mariners had. It helps that there are more Wild Card teams otherwise the M's may have had to wait another year to make the playoffs. I know that there are a fair amount of purists out there that think only the division winners should make the playoffs. I remember when there were only the teams from the American League and National League and they played each other all season long and the team with the best record would go to the World S...

REARDAN – It took all of 14 seconds for the Lind-Ritzville, Sprague, Washtucna and Harrington Broncos to show why they are one of the top 2B schools in the state. That is how long it took for Brock Kinch to return the game's opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. The Broncos went on to defeat the Screaming Eagles 46-7 in NE2B action on Oct. 14. After Kinch's score the Broncos unveiled a hard-hitting defense by forcing a Reardan fumble on their first play from scrimmage. S...

  • In Appreciation

    Dale Anderson|Updated Oct 11, 2022

I think it is important to pay attention to what is going on especially at a high school football game. Such was the case on Friday night at Jimmie Snider Field in Ritzville. It was Homecoming and it was also senior night since this was the last scheduled home game for the Broncos versus the Jenkins (Chewelah) Cougars. It just so happened that I got to the field a bit early and as part of the chain gang I like to be ready for action. I saw three Chewelah players on the...

  • Broncos run over Crusaders

    The Journal|Updated Oct 4, 2022

COLBERT – The Broncos boys football team improved to 4-1 on the season Saturday, routing Northwest Christian, 35-7. The Crusaders came out tough and held Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Washtucna/Harrington scoreless in the first quarter. But they themselves couldn’t put any points on the board either. In the second quarter, the Crusaders (1-4) notched one touchdown and added the point-after to take a 7-0 lead to the locker room at halftime. That was the end of the Crusaders reign. In the third quarter, the Broncos put up 21 una...

  • Finally

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Oct 4, 2022

A month ago EWU played Tennessee State and part way through the second half a storm passed by and the fans were instructed to leave the stadium because of lightning strikes nearby. So we did. My buddy Ken and I went to my car while others stood outside throwing footballs or reconnecting at a tailgate party. So that was a late summer storm for eastern Washington. Just this past Saturday the Eagles were scheduled to play the University of Florida Gators in Gainesville. This...

  • Name your price

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Sep 27, 2022

I think we are all looking at the rising cost of living and we’re wondering where it will end or if it will end. I think it is frustrating when those people in power have a tendency to say that it’s not so bad or it won’t last long. That really doesn’t make me feel confident especially when those that are influential have other priorities. Who pays the price? Those that are in need are usually the ones that pay the biggest price. Those that can afford it usually are a bit unc...

  • Eagles defeat Vikings in OT thriller

Teren Kowatsch, Whitman County Gazette|Updated Sep 27, 2022

ST. JOHN – It took four overtimes for the Eagles to upend a winless Garfield-Palouse football team, 54-48, in a Class 1B matchup Friday night, Sept. 23. "I told the guys all week long we cannot underestimate Gar-Pal," St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Coach John Hergert said. "That was wild. I don't know if I've ever coached an overtime football game," Garfield-Palouse Coach Garrett Parrish said. It was the second time the teams met this season already. In a Week 1 matchup, the E...

  • Broncos Country rides

Drew Lawson, Lincoln County Record-Times|Updated Sep 27, 2022

RITZVILLE – The scoring came early and the scoring came often for the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos when the Davenport Gorillas paid a visit. The scoring was nonexistent on the other side, resulting in a lopsided 40-0 win for LRS Friday, Sept. 23. Sophomore Brody Boness put LRS in the scoring column with a 49-yard touchdown run after Davenport was forced to punt on its opening drive. The signs of disaster became apparent for Davenport on the ensuing kickoff, when the ball t...
