  • Coach Heidenreich ends his coaching career on a high note

    Updated Jun 4, 2015

Congratulations Coach Heidenreich! The LRS Girls Track and Field won a team state championship this past weekend and it was a fitting end to Randy Heidenreich’ s coaching career. I had the privilege of running for Randy in high school and it was always comforting to know you were getting the best advice and coaching you could get. He was the coach who always would stay late to work on things and had the ability to make the sport fun. Now having helped Randy coach the past 4 years it has been a great education to see how he c... Full story

  • Lind citizen has been outstanding for the community

    Updated Jun 4, 2015

We have one citizen in the Town of Lind that has been cleaning up vacant lots, street gutters, sidewalks, vacant house lots, etc. Dennis Hill is proud of our town and wants it to look much, much better for Derby Weekend. He is asking for nothing nor is he receiving payment by the town. A few individuals have given him money for gas, but otherwise he is doing it on his own time and expense. The town of Lind has five paid employees and Dennis has done more than those five employees toward preparing our town for this event. A...

  • Hot Cows Don’t “Got Milk”!

    Updated May 21, 2015

I just read an article that says, “Cows can feel the heat just like people. Heat stress can significantly reduce cows’ appetite, fertility and milk production levels during the summer, according to Cargill Inc. The stress can begin when the temperature-humidity index reaches 68, which is still a comfortable level for most people. Cargill thinks it has a solution.” (http://www.startribune.com/cargill-new-feed-products-can-protect-overheated-cows-during-summer-heat/303520921/) Let’s hope it works. Because globally we just ha...

  • Freedom of speech commonly misused

    Updated May 21, 2015

Most of my life I remember that there was a serious penalty for doing or saying things that could cause a riot or serious injuries. It is also deeply imbedded in my memory that we have freedom of speech that I believe has been abused by using these incendiary statements. During the last decade it seems that our great Republic has seen some African-American leaders abuse the law about free speech to the point these words have helped incite riots. These riots appear to be getting larger in scope and longer in duration....

  • Support needed to keep live events at theatre

    Updated May 21, 2015

My wife and I attended The Doghouse Boyz performance last Friday night at The Ritz Theater. It was an incredible show. Two very talented performers kept us totally entertained for over two hours. The venue was impressive-our local theater has been lovingly restored with comfortable seating, ample leg room, and a new stage setup that worked beautifully. The performance was an eclectic mix of jazz and blues with incredible guitar and bass talent clearly evident. The new stage system allowed us to watch the performance with a... Full story

  • Published letters should be fact checked

    Updated May 7, 2015

After reading yet another letter from Gerald R. Ray, Spokane, I am compelled to ask him to start providing specific sources for the statements he makes. In his latest, “English needs to be the official language”, he managed to misstate the effect of President Clinton’s Executive Order 13166 and the stated goals of La Raza with regard to ballot languages. These things are easily ascertainable. Perhaps The Journal should employ a fact-checker when faced with yet another letter from Gerald R. Ray, Spokane. Lynn Walker, Ritzv...

  • Wrong way parking is illegal

    Updated May 7, 2015

Had a interesting conversation with an officer from the Ritzville Police Department this morning April 29, 2015. This concerns left wheel to the curb parking. That is to say parking on the wrong side of the street. Facing on coming traffic. The police officer told me that there is a state law against this kind of parking. It is not illegal to park left wheel to the curb on a one way street. If I understood the police officer, this practice of parking on the wrong side of the street is over looked. The police officer told me...

  • English needs to be the official language

    Updated Apr 30, 2015

Congress is still fighting about whether or not La Raza (Liberals) will win and we would legally become a multi-lingual country. The Red party would like to pass “The English Language Unity Act” that would make us a Legal English Language Republic. This Bill has been viable for years but there were not enough votes to pass it. La Raza would have voters faced with ballots in over 200 Languages. The number of people and their languages is increasing thanks to our lack of immigration laws that have teeth! Former President Cli... Full story

  • Appreciation for improving First Avenue

    Updated Apr 30, 2015

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Ahrens (Ritzville Lumber) for taking on the enormous task of cleaning up the eyesore at the old tire shop on 1st Avenue. This has long been an embarrassment to many of us that call Ritzville home and it’s a pleasure to go by and see the changes Dave has made. Not only has he emptied the building, hauled massive amounts of “junk” to the dump, power washed the outside and donated hundreds of bikes to a charitable organization, he actually has plans to utilize this landm... Full story

  • Discussing fossil fuels

    Updated Apr 23, 2015

Re: Fossil Fuels Aren’t Going Away Soon (3/26/15). The author states three reasons for “not giving up on fossil fuels: (1) they’re plentiful; (2) despite billions in subsidies, alternative fuels have trouble competing; (3) the third issue …is carbon emissions.” He asks why not “encourage research and development of cleaner fossil fuels, along with solar and wind?” The 20th century business model of relying on fossil fuels is outmoded not in our best interests. Here’s why. (1) Fossil fuels are a finite resource; (2) t...

  • Social media could benefit ACSO

    Updated Apr 16, 2015

I am an avid viewer of Facebook and know many others are as well. Recently I have been seeing posts from the Lincoln County Sheriffs Department displaying criminal activities (Sprague kidnapping) as well as positive notes of their department and local area. It would be a wonderful thing if Adams County Sherriff’s department could to the same thing. So many people now get their news online and now many people are fed the news via Facebook. It would be a splendid opportunity for our local sheriff’s department to post cri... Full story

  • Lind residents voice anger at vandals

    Updated Apr 16, 2015

Now, aren’t you proud of yourself/selves? Isn’t it bad enough our little town has lost so much in the past 50 years, you have to go around shooting the windows of buildings to make things worse. It costs the building owner big bucks to replace those windows, so we may just have boarded up openings. Aren’t you making it look worse to out-of-town people who come for the Alumni Banquet, Mother’s Day, the Combine Demolition Derby?? You may want to consider this….YOU may end up paying for replacing all that glass. Think about tha...

  • Washington’s workforce is ever-changing

    Updated Apr 9, 2015

Seattle’s new $15 minimum wage law began going into effect on Wednesday, April Fool’s Day. This pricey west coast city is basically the first metropolis to push employers into providing higher wages. I think it is unfortunate that the west side doesn’t consider what the east side population thinks or how it is going to affect them! I know in my life time I have heard the west side being labeled as being selfish and inconsiderate a large number of times. It will be interesting to see what the business community will do to tr...

  • Ritzville and Economic Development

    Updated Mar 26, 2015

When we think about economic development many of us have different ideas: Some of these ideas are sound with good merit, some are extravagant but may be worth consideration, some are expensive, and some may take a lot of volunteer effort…… but lets look at some simple things that we can do to help our businesses and our local economy. 1) First we all need to be good ambassadors to our town; When we are out and about we should all try to temper our comments to promote the good points of our town. When we are frustrated wit... Full story

  • Recognizing Lind’s Mayor for hard work

    Updated Mar 5, 2015

I would like to publicly thank our Mayor, Jamie Schmunk, for the great job she is doing as our mayor! I have lived in Lind nearly ten years now and have been involved with the community almost the whole time. While serving on town council I had the opportunity of serving under two different mayors and seeing the changes made under Jamie’s direction have been quite encouraging. She has quite the passion for our little town and has spent the time learning at every opportunity she has and has developed networking connections v...

    Updated Feb 19, 2015

Last month a tragic death occurred in Lind of a young father leaving behind an expectant wife Maria and three young children, all whom attend school in Lind. With the birth of a fourth child fast approaching in March, community members have asked how they can help. Financial assistance of any amount would best meet the needs of the family at this time, therefore the Lind Ministerial Association is receiving donations. • Working towards having English be America’s official language

    Updated Jan 8, 2015

With the Republican gaining control of both houses in 2015 we have our best chance of getting English established as the official language of our great Republic. However, we must act fast as La Raza is growing in the number of supporters that want America to be a multi-lingual country. La Raza really has a head start as they have been very successful at getting millions of dollars from congress to further their agenda. We need to find out WHY!!! Their headquarters are just blocks from the White House. La Raza’s Lawyers l...

  • Library Director addresses elevator installation concerns

    Updated Jan 8, 2015

To concerned library patrons, There has been much interest in our proposed elevator project at the library in recent years. Since I became director in late 2010, the library board and I have been researching options and meeting with architects to determine what would be the best solution to make our beautiful historic Carnegie library ADA accessible. After deciding that ramps would have a substantial and negative visual impact on the building, we decided to focus on a three-stop elevator that would have outside access at our... Full story

  • Concerns about the library elevator project

    Updated Dec 25, 2014

Library patrons please read this. A few months ago there was a letter or article about Carnegie Library putting in a elevator from main floor to basement for handicapped patrons. How are these patrons going to get from outside to main floor. You directors had better make an outside ramp to get into the main floor. Ramps are not hard to build but there are rules to follow. I know I have helped build two ramps-one on a house and one on a public building. Bessie Allen, Washtucna...
