  • Bond important to school’s future

    Updated Jan 14, 2016

In 1957 middle school students in Ritzville School District entered a new building, Hawthorn Middle School. This school housed 5th through 8th grade students for 26 years. In the summer of 1982, with declining enrollment and an aging high school building, the school district upgraded Hawthorn Middle School to Ritzville High School. Since that time there have been minor upgrades to the building in 1994 and 2004 to replace worn flooring and meet ADA compliance. Ritzville School District is currently asking voters to approve a...

  • Happy Walker

    Updated Jan 7, 2016

A big thank you to the city crew for keeping the walking path plowed this year. It has been great to still be able to walk it every day come snow or shine. Terri Cody, Ritzville...

  • America’s visa program is lax

    Updated Jan 7, 2016

Are you aware that America is involved with a Visa Waiver Program that allows as many as 20 million citizens from 38 countries to travel to the U.S. and stay for as many as 90 days? Therefore, people from friendly countries in Europe and Asia can visit without adequate screening by a U.S. consulate. It also allows Americans to travel abroad with minimum screening. With the world situation like it is, should this policy be in effect! Business and tourist dollars are the reasons this program is still allowed to operate. Should...

  • Gratitude for improved sound system for local concert

    Updated Dec 24, 2015

We would like to thank Big Bend’s Caring Neighbors and an anonymous community member for donations to purchase the most fantastic sound system for our grade school. We could understand every word from the children at the Christmas Concert. It was an awesome program. We cannot believe what Mrs. Schafer gets those little kids to do and the costumes were great. Merry Christmas Ritzville. Beverly and Jim Cobb, Ritzville...

  • Health insurance changes, information

    Updated Dec 24, 2015

Ho Ho Ho, Santa is coming and it’s about time for snow! If you are one of the many millions who are unhappy with your health insurance, you need to get busy. Don’t be too unhappy as 8 of 10 will have their cost increases cushioned by government subsidies. Last year the navigators were poorly vetted and they did not do a stellar job of guiding their clients through the maze of possibilities. Too many people looked at only the premium. The deductibles were overlooked! If you don’t want to make any changes you are autom...

  • Lack of substitute teachers in the U.S.

    Updated Dec 17, 2015

We are experiencing a shortage of substitute teachers in the United States and it is hitting our state quite hard! I am a retired educator so I watch these things closely. Washington has been hiring people with a college degree who can pass the logical tests that safeguard our children. The college degree can be in any field. I have a suggestion that could help solve the problem. About 45 years ago I was involved in helping a lady get a teaching degree without going back to the campus. There was a program that allowed her to... Full story

  • Candidates should address over-spending

    Updated Dec 10, 2015

The debates are about over and they will soon be forgotten except for the Liberal Moderators. The red party has too many “wannabes” and the blues needed more. The reds are turning it into a three person race. They need to have Iowa point them in the right direction, as our White House has lost the tone to be convincing at a precarious time. Bernie appears like he would like to be Hillary’s vice president. His conscientious objector stance will not get him elected. Hillary’s baggage could possibly force Mr. Biden to be a la...

  • Ritzville Unifine Flour Mill

    Updated Nov 26, 2015

This is a conceptual proposal and not a solicitation for investment Conceptual Proposal, General Overview. The tentative plan is to make an initial offering of two blocks of stock (items 2 and 3) in the “Ritzville Unifine Flour Mill” (referred to as “the entity” in the balance of this document). Upon satisfactory placement of the initial offering, the assets of the enterprise will be the elements of a Unifine flour milling system valued at $100,000 (item 2) and the cash paid for stock (minimum $20,000) (item 3). Second item:... Full story

  • Ritzville Glass to close its doors

    Updated Nov 5, 2015

Retirement...it’s something we all look forward to, but when it is time, it’s hard to let go. After much thought and careful consideration, I have decided it is time to retire and enjoy the simpler things in life. After 45+ years in the glass business (15 of those serving the Ritzville area) the time has come for me to retire; which means, Ritzville Glass will be closing its doors. I would like to say THANK YOU for your support over the past 15 years; it is because of your support, that small businesses succeed. My hope is...

  • Taking responsibility for Lind candidate letter mailed last week

    Updated Oct 29, 2015

I am accepting complete responsibility for the “Considerations for Council Position No. 4” letter (part of which says no candidate endorsed this letter). I publicly apologize for the resulting anger directed at John Claypool and Mayor Jamie Schmunk, and the incorrect assumption that John Claypool, Mayor Schmunk, or PJ Jacobsen had anything to do with the writing of the letter. Denise Snead, Lind... Full story

  • Appreciative for Cook’s article

    Updated Oct 29, 2015

Gary Cook wishes to become mayor of Ritzville and inasmuch as he is running unopposed, he is likely to become our next mayor. I am grateful the folks at The Ritzville Journal provided Mr. Cook with an opportunity to express himself. I believe the citizens of Ritzville should be encouraged by his willingness to provide us with his thinking regarding his forthcoming role as mayor. We can also be encouraged by what he had to say. Folks who may have missed the article should seek out The Ritzville Journal of October 22, 2015 on... Full story

  • Finding your passion

    Updated Oct 29, 2015

“What’s your passion?” the speaker asked at the Chamber of Commerce meeting pointing his finger at me. Being put on the spot is not my favorite position; I immediately answered the first thing that came to mind, “My yard”. Since then I’ve thought about my response and what had lead up to it. Over 10 years ago I had bought a 1950ish house with virtually nothing in the yard except dirt: no grass, no trees, a few unkept bushes, and a couple of stumps. Through the years, step by step and dollar by dollar, I proceeded to transfor...

  • Claypool addresses the Citizens for Positive Progress letter

    Updated Oct 29, 2015

I am running for Lind Town Council because I want to be a positive influence for our community. The “Citizens for Positive Progress” sent out a letter which appears to be campaign material from me. I do not know who all these citizens are, did not know about the letter, did not give permission to use my name, and wasn’t even on the mailing list. I was not given the opportunity to stop the mailing or respond to it. My third-hand copy was given to me just last Friday. The letter attacks the integrity of the members of the town... Full story

  • Unopposed candidates are still qualified

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Mr. Boyer, I am terribly disappointed in you and your letter to the editor. You went ahead and made an assumption without bothering to talk to the people who you are slandering. I know you never asked me how or why the Mayor chose me to fill in on the council. Do you think the Mayor closed her eyes and just pulled a name out of a hat? I would think at the very least you would ask us why we are there? Anyone that knows me, knows that I love this town, I have since I moved here. Love the small town feel and it’s people. The d...

  • Belittling another candidate hinders a campaign

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

The letter we all received regarding one of our council members, Paula Bell, is dirty politicking at best. It disgraces a woman who has done a great job serving our community and who truly has the best interest of Lind at heart. Myself, along with anyone I have ever talked to know that if there is ever a problem they wish to address, it can be taken to Paula Bell and she will take it up with the correct person or persons. I hope to serve the community with a credited and seasoned council member like Paula for as many years...

  • Negative campaigning will backfire

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

It is very disturbing that you, Citizens for Positive Progress, chose a route of dirty politics through negative campaigning. Lind voters received an anonymous letter today. The letter put a negative focus on not only the targeted council member, but also indirectly “slammed” the others who sit on that board with her. Shame on you! We also noted that your return address was at PO Box No. 000. This ‘secretive’ address is also very meaningless as there is no such PO Box in Lind. Just curious why you didn’t sign your names on...

  • Supporting Bell for Town Council

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

As members of the Lind community, we confidently support Paula Bell for re-election to the Town of Lind No. 4 Position. Paula is well-known for her commitment to accountability in our local Town government. She is a hard-working council member who puts hours of her own time into researching the proper rules and laws. Paula makes sure she is doing the best job possible and is not afraid of doing what is right, even if it is not popular. Her years of experience make her the best choice for her position. Please mark your...

  • Public letters should be signed

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

To: Citizens for Positive Progress Just a note: I am a Lind citizen and have been for 64 years. I am NOT on the list of Citizens for Positive Progress. If you are brave enough to send a letter through the mail, then be sure you have a legitimate post office box number. I am NOT ashamed to put my name on anything I send out to the public and want them to read! My name is: Bill Wills, Lind...

  • Voting for Claypool to bring change

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

While it is nice to support a friend, most of those writing in support of Paula Bell for Lind Council Position 4 have not attended council meetings. Paula Bell does her research and comes to council with questions and comments like - the town crew’s trucks are not getting highway MPG while driving around town. No vehicles get highway MPG in town. Too much time has been spent on the non-existent issues she brings to the table. John Claypool’s business experience, vision for Lind’s future, and intelligent professionalism will... Full story

  • Trooper Burt goes beyond the call of duty

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

I would like everyone in the Columbia Basin to know that there is a very wonderful State Patrolman, his name is officer “Burt”, a Ritzville State Trooper. “A friend” or so I thought got me lost, you see I’m from Othello. Then he took my money, my jacket, my flashlight. I thought he was going for gas. There was not a house or car in sight. It was 3 or 4 in the morning and he, my friend, left me all alone on the side of the road with no gas, in the middle of I don’t know where. A trucker came by and stopped and I’m in hyst...

  • Citizens for Positive Progress letter unacceptable

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

As I rushed home from work yesterday, I paused to check my mail, stuffed the stack of seemingly unimportant items in my purse, and raced home to pick up my kids and off to Wilbur we went—my daughter’s volleyball game would begin in an hour. As I sat between games, I leafed through the mail, opening one from “Citizens for Positive Progress.” As I read, my mouth dropped open and a sick feeling churned in my stomach. This letter was in support of John Claypool for City Council Position No. 4, and instead of simply outlining his... Full story

  • “Dirty politics” don’t win elections

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Talk about dirty politics! Paula’s opponent has won the title. Paula Bell has run a clean campaign sticking with the matters and not badmouthing anybody. Paula has done a great job for the Town of Lind. She, as a conscientious member of the Council, goes through the budget thoroughly identifying errors and questioning expenses. When an expense is to be made, she checks the allotment in the budget for that item or service. Paula votes yay or nay, whichever she feels is in the best interest of the Town. Mentioning voting in t... Full story

  • Supporting Claypool for Lind Town Council

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Lind voters have an important choice to make in this year’s election of Town Council members. Having served on the Council, I appreciate the sacrifice of time, energy and attention serving on the Council entails, and applaud all who are willing to fill those important seats. Two respected and appreciated individuals are running for Council Position 4, John Claypool and Paula Bell. Except for a small sign on the community bulletin board, the Claypool campaign has been virtually non--existent. John fails in the self--promotio...

  • Supporting Bell for Town Council

    Updated Oct 15, 2015

I want to encourage all the citizens of Lind to vote Paula Bell for position No. 4 on the Lind Town Council. Paula is a long-time resident of Lind. She has devoted her professional and personal life to teaching and supporting the students of the district in all their endeavors. As a teacher, she is already a great leader in the classroom and the community. She looks for the best in her students and wants to see them do the best they can, not only in school, but later in life. I have no doubt that she will transfer this...

  • Candidate forums should be provided for all districts

    Updated Oct 15, 2015

The citizens of Lind are going to be treated to a candidate forum. It appears the candidates there wish to explain themselves. Is this sort of thing still legal in eastern Adams County? The citizens of Ritzville have not been treated to a candidate forum in a very long time. One reason for this is the lack of contested positions. In the past two or three council elections there have been one maybe two contested races. The mayor has been quite active in filling vacant positions so at election time there are no open positions....
