Our present Hospital Board of Commissioners made a decision to build a new hospital. They asked for nine million dollars and ignored public concerns. They had no back up plan for when the bond didn’t pass so the state finally made the decision for them. It was either repair the present facility or close the doors. Now they’re asking for a $6.4 million bond issue. The total money they are needing is $1.1 million more than before. It seems that it costs more to remodel the old facility than to build a new one. It appears to...
Wasp problems? Get rid of nests without poison! Spraying wasp nests with cooking spray will prevent further growth and spraying eaves or other affected areas will discourage future nest building. The spray fills in the pores of wood, keeping the area too slick for wasps to gain a foothold. It may have to be reapplied after rain. It also will work for ants. Michele Kirschenmann, Ritzville...
We tell our young people that alcohol and marijuana are bad for them and then we voted to make alcohol more available than it had been previously. Then 56 percent of the registered voters (who voted) passed a law to make weed available in many different forms so that non-smokers could escape reality. The laws about alcohol and marijuana were written so that most people didn’t understand them. Alcohol is more expensive and weed will be more expensive until supply matches demand! The sad facts about both situations are that w...
Thanks so much for the article on the restoration of the NPRY semaphore signal and Telegraph and Signal pole at the museum depot. Per our conversation at the Journal Thursday, July 10 the signal light itself works but the moveable signal and blade are not yet fully operational. For this, Mr. Pat Padgett, a BNSF signal maintainer, is coming to our rescue. However, he is often on call 24-7 day and night. What time he may get off, providing they don’t ask him to cover for another maintainer in a different district, is for him a...
High praise to the couple that is taking such great care of the fairgrounds, it looks fabulous this year, hope you return every year. Terri Cody, Ritzville... Full story
There is nothing more frustrating in Washington State politics than being a conservative on the East side. It seems like most of our votes don’t really matter because five populous, progressive counties around Puget Sound control all statewide elections. Even when we do win, like Dino Rossi’s victory for Governor, the Democrats find some spare ballots in a closet in order to steal the election. The upcoming 4th district Congressional election gives us a chance to make a difference and the westsiders can’t do anything about... Full story
A few items have come to the city both as questions and problems and the fire department needs your help to solve them. First, the question about fire pits, even with the “No Burn” in effect at present, it was decided that they will be permitted. The requirements would be that they are no larger than three feet in size, that they have a screen cover and that you must stay with the fire and ensure it is out before leaving. During recent fire calls, it has been noted that some alleyways are becoming harder to get the fire tru... Full story
Saddle Shoes, Early Beatles, and Kennedy. The Washtucna Pioneer Cemetery was formed into Adams County Cemetery District No. 1 in 1961. Used pipes were purchased to bring water from downtown all the way up to the cemetery. Those pipes have done an amazing service for over 50 years. But now they are starting to fail. A break was located across from Java Bloom and Wayne Johnstone, Mike Ebert, Kelly Olson, Steve Sullivan, Brian Dainty, Byron Allen, and Paul McKenzie dug out and worked on repairs. Mike McKenzie made the necessary... Full story
Thank You Ritzville- it is unbelievable what you did for The Ritz Theatre at our benefit garage sale - $8,245.50 - can you believe that??? And it was 100 percent profit because John Monroe donated the use of the building and Harvest Foods donated plastic grocery bags. A very special thanks goes to Ruth Gust and family for the generous estate/garage sale items. More good news - anything left over went to Goodwill via the Nazarene Church kids and they get credit toward Church Camp. I cannot thank my wonderful team of...
Oh My Gosh – When I asked for help from this community you cannot believe how you responded. Garage sale here we are. This past weekend the Lind community happily hosted hundreds of guests at the annual Combine Derby and from all indications a good time was had by all—all except the Lind Senior Center members who found themselves missing their handcrafted bench on Sunday morning. Built by the late Howard Heil and treasured by all the members. The bench had not been bolted into place, as had other purchased and placed around the downtown area. When Howard donated the bench to the center, I asked how we would go about securing it in place a...
There are several locations around town to dispose of yard waste, grass and leaves. No garbage is to be dumped in these dumpsters. The locations are: at the school ag shop on Division Street; across from the high school on Ninth Avenue ; behind the city shop off of Jefferson Street; at the end of West 10th Avenue; at Danekas Funeral Home and Crematory parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Palouse Street; West Second Avenue and Lewis Street; and Par Drive. Mayor Linda Kadlec, Ritzville...
I am writing in reference to Dede Brown’s recent letter regarding the discontinuation of the Western Art Show. The show was not discontinued for trivial reasons or because those involved had lost interest. One person who held a leadership role in planning the show was also dedicated to another project that benefits the community. He has given that project more attention than the average individual would give to a full time job! There was simply not the time to give full attention to both projects. Another person who had b...
I was asked at the Post Office this morning when purchasing a book of stamps, if I would like a book of U.S. Flag stamps. With a World War II dad and a Vietnam little brother, I said sure. Took one look and my heart sank, as I was looking at the American Flag backwards. What a shame. A real slam at our Old Glory. A proud past member of Eugene Kirby American Legion Auxillary. Contrary to popular belief representative government does work. The hospital is a good example of this. Over the last few years the citizens of East Adams County have broken tradition and engaged in the messy business of forming public policy. As a result, the unrealistic dream of a new state-of-the-art hospital appears to have been set aside and long overdue repairs and maintenance are being planned. Admittedly, dreams are good things, if there is sufficient business and finances to support them. However, there is a... Full story
We have lived in Ritzville for 18 years and are continually amazed at how giving this community is - ok now I NEED YOUR HELP - I volunteered to put on a garage sale, during the Ritzville Community Yard Sale on 6-21-14, for The Ritz Theatre. They still need about $30,000 to go digital. You must have STUFF that you would like to get rid of and at the same time help The Ritz Theatre. John Monroe has donated the use of his building at 114 East Main - right across from The Ritz. Items can be dropped off there on Wednesday,... Full story
Boring, boring, BORING! I don’t know who’s bright idea it was to do away with the art show on Memorial weekend but boy did you goof! Since I moved here in ‘07, I have really enjoyed this weekend. All the wonderful artists, getting to walk around and see all the variety in their work. Meeting the artists, enjoying them and their art. The venders on the street, the food, the smiles, the laughter of the children as they learned to Lasso, the staged gun fights, the ladies walking around in their Victorian dresses, (and yes and I...
Our family would like to first send out a very big thank you to all of the wonderful friends and community members who prayed, and sent sweet and loving thoughts and messages, who donated to the fund in Dillon’s name at Sterling Bank, who brought meals who just gave us so much love and support. We are so grateful to live in a community full of people willing to be there for us during this traumatic time. It was a wonderful reminder and boost for Dillon to know how many people remembered him and cared so much about him. He i...
Our representative, Doc Hastings, writes that as part of balancing the national budget, an all-of-the-above energy plan “creates more jobs and lowers energy bills, and it overhauls the federal tax code to boost wages, bring more jobs home, and make our manufacturers and entrepreneurs more competitive.” (4/17/14, p. 4). This energy plan includes the continued use of fossil fuels—coal, oil, natural gas—that emit carbon dioxide (CO2). Volunteers from the Citizens’ Climate Lobby have been urging Doc and fellow Republica...
As news of teenage drug abuse and drugs found in drinking water abound, Ritzville Drug Company wants to help. The Office of National Drug Control has found that prescription drugs are the drug of choice among 12 and 13 year olds, while a third of all new abusers of prescription drugs were between the ages of 12 and 17. Though it may be argued that the presence of drugs in drinking water is negligible, more and more consumers are disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the drain, adding pharmaceutical pollution to... The Ritzville Eagles Aerie and Auxiliary No. 2739 once again hosted the community wide Easter Egg Hunt April 12, in the city park. What an amazing event! And it is all over in the blink of an eye. So, before I blink my eyes again and we are planning next year’s event, I wanted to take a minute and share with everyone some of the behind the scenes activities: The Eagles Auxiliary hard boiled and dyed over 100 dozen eggs – all of them donated by local businesses. There were toys and balls and balloons and squirt guns and hul... Full story
The City of Ritzville is presently involved in the process of adding sidewalks and bike paths for use by the citizenry of our city. Free sidewalks? Free bike paths? At the city council meeting of March 18, 2014, the subject of annexing Weber road was introduced. The discussions which followed, included annexing into the city, farm land on the south side of Weber road. The name of the person or persons in city hall anxious to annex that farm land was not mentioned. It appeared the city council members were not prepared to...
Bill and Hollie Banner’s son, Dillon (age 20), was in a terrible car accident on Sunday, April 6, in North Dakota. He rolled his car five times and flew out the sunroof. He survived, but is dealing with many injuries. He had surgery on Monday, April 7, to reconstruct his face and reattach his nose. Dillon also had spine surgery the following Wednesday that included several screws and two titanium rods that are now supporting his spine, due to one cracked vertebrae and one split vertebrae, four broken ribs, a gash on his s...
When President Obama granted amnesty to about 900,00 Latino immigrants (whose parents where illegals) I immediately thought of people I knew who followed the rules to become citizens. They were from Europe and they had gone through Ellis Island where they had to pass a physical and answer a lot of questions. I know of some who were rejected and sent back. The people who were approved found transportation to the homes of their sponsors where they stayed until they found work and places to live. Their sponsors were responsible...
Thank you John Rankin and the loyal RDDA volunteers who have worked together to update our local Theatre. It will remain a special place in our hearts and community. You have put many hours into this project and renewed the Art Deco Theatre, created and maintained by people of Ritzville and the surrounding area. Hopefully the funds will continue in to make it a complete theatre with a new age digital projection equipment. The project was welcomed by many of the people of the area on Saturday, March 22, as was the special... Full story
