  • Lind resident votes for Bell

    Updated Oct 15, 2015

I have known Paula since she moved to Lind as a new high school teacher. Besides teaching, she raised a family, was involved in the Lind Community and became an elected official to the Town of Lind council. Currently, Paula is seeking re-election and I encourage your vote for her. Without reservation I highly recommend her as a strong candidate to the city council position No. 4. Since I attend most of the council meetings, I’ve had many opportunities to witness her determination and straight forward approach to become an i...

  • Bell addresses the Lind community

    Updated Oct 8, 2015

To the Lind Community: Time is fast approaching to cast your votes again for the Town of Lind’s council positions, and I ask for your vote to re-elect me for position No. 4. When I was first sworn in as a council member, I took the oath of office very seriously pledging to do the best job I could do the town of Lind. Throughout my participation and experiences as a council member, I’ve dedicated time to research, to investigate, ask questions of professionals and to gain valuable experience and information by listening to...

  • John Wayne Trail displays Washington’s beauty

    Updated Oct 8, 2015

We live in a beautiful place. I look out and see sagebrush and late blooming native flowers, wheat stubble, millennia-old scab rock, and sky. Big, blue sky. Our semi-arid desert climate can be harsh and abrasive; little rain, drastic temperatures, and that darned wind. This is where we live, a place to take pride in; a place I love to share with friends, family, and strangers. I’m sure you do, too. It was recently brought to light that one of our few state recreational resources was nearly lost to us last month. Nearly 130 m...

  • Putting an end to Alzheimer's

    Updated Oct 1, 2015

My family and I appreciate the Ritzville Journal covering our involvement in The Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is a devastating diagnosis affecting the patient and family. Initially, the person diagnosed with the disease is haunted by the diagnosis. One may still function socially, yet over time, there are memory lapses and the forgetting of familiar words that causes frustration and confusion. As the disease continues to alter the brain, more and more of the disease burden is switched to caregivers. Your loved one...

  • EACH Foundation Auction on Oct. 17

    Updated Oct 1, 2015

Here’s that fun time of year again, when we can benefit our hospital foundation while sipping wine and having great food. This year’s fundraiser is all about tailgating, so we get to wear our favorite team’s attire and chow down on traditional tailgate food like ribs, chicken, baked beans, and all the fixings. Plus, there’s a silent auction and a live auction and you know how exciting that is when the bidding really gets going! Tickets are only $25 bought ahead of time and $30 at the door. You can pick them up at Cow Creek,...

  • Addressing the immigration debate

    Updated Oct 1, 2015

Our great nation has been accepting immigrants for more than 200 years. When they first started becoming part of the United States it was to help build railroads, factories and businesses that would allow us to grow and prosper. After W.W. II, Korea and Vietnam we started accepting large numbers of people as refugees to the point that we had ballots printed in over 300 dialects for our last two elections. We should remember that we are living in a time when the vast majority of the world’s populations are not our friends. T...

  • Political motives to blame for wildfires

    Updated Aug 27, 2015

I am sorry, all these fires that have been so massive and destructive causing millions of dollars in damage, with a billion dollars to fight the fire. What a waste to have a devastated forest. Now take into account all the dead wildlife, owls, birds, deer, fox, bear, wolves, coyotes and salmon with loss of habitat. Was it political not to have selective log and hire crews to cut out dead heads and clean the forest floors. This is what I think as there is no rain on the west side or east side, it’s not water warming it’s the...

  • Local heroes deserve thanks

    Updated Aug 20, 2015

What a great country we have, when volunteer Firemen and others, put in time together to control a strong wind driven fire. This is what happened last Friday as an accident on 395 started a fire that had the potential of moving to my farmstead. Firefighters came from Lind, Ritzville, Othello, Connell, Warden and Washtucna. Ryan Kuch worked for hours with a tractor and disc. Thanks to all of you Heroes! Earl M. Franz, Lind...

  • Ritzville is excellent for family activities

    Updated Aug 20, 2015

On the weekend of August 7-8, the Jaeger Family had a reunion. Since some of the family had grown up in Ritzville, we thought it would be the perfect place to meet. What a wonderful town to have such an event. We utilized many of the town’s amenities. We all stayed at the Bronco Inn. We were given a great family room rate, complimentary breakfast, great accommodations and outstanding service. We rented the swimming pool for a private family time on Saturday morning. What an amazing facility and it was all ours for two hours....

  • Presidential conventions have changed

    Updated Aug 13, 2015

My goodness, I am sure that there are many seniors who remember the good old days when each state sent delegates to the Presidential Conventions to nominate their party’s candidate. I remember this better than most seniors as I had a relative who was a delegate to the blue party’s conventions. They were chosen because of monetary donations and working hard to help get their party members elected to county and state offices. As I recall they spent a lot of time and money to acquire this prestigious honor! The conventions usu...

  • Oregon Coast Adventure with Alpha Omega

    Updated Aug 6, 2015

We began our journey going south on Hwy. 395 crossing into Oregon at Umatilla then went west on I-84 along the Columbia River. Between The Dalles and Hood River at the Memaloose rest area, we stopped for our picnic lunch. We arrived into Lincoln City around 6 p.m. The next day we attended a kite making workshop given by local professionals. That afternoon traveled north on Hwy. 101. We seen the famous Tillamook Cheese Factory. That evening we enjoyed the ocean, the wonderful view as the sun set over the horizon. We went into...

  • Issues with school state testing

    Updated Aug 6, 2015

What do larger school districts do when they have too many seniors that failed the required state biology test that was necessary for graduation? They contact our state legislators and get them to put a two year moratorium on the requirement, till 2017. That way the parents are happy and Johnny and Suzie can go to a college that many are not academically prepared for. The two year delay should give Olympia time to water down the test so that more students can pass the test. This makes the school look good, the parents should...

  • Responding to false information regarding Lind election

    Updated Jul 30, 2015

You have been given false information concerning my past service on the Town of Lind town council. I would like to present the correct information and explain why I am seeking election to that body. We moved to Lind in the fall of 2007. Early 2008, then mayor Larry Koch asked me to complete the term for a council member who had resigned. He also asked me to serve as the representative from Lind on the Adams County Development Council. During that time period Mayor Koch also appointed Paula Bell to fill a vacated council...

  • Health concerns regarding flies in Lind area

    Updated Jul 23, 2015

I am writing about the influx of flies originating from National Foods chicken ranch and/or the Perfect Blend Plant (which processes chicken manure for fertilizer) near Othello. The fly infestation hits the town of Lind and the surrounding areas with remarkable punctuality, visiting us at least 4-5 times a year. Our earliest infestation occurred in February of this year. I didn’t even know flies were active at this time of the year. The flies are unbearable. Preparing meals, doing daily chores, readying for harvest and e...

  • Endorsing candidate Paula Bell

    Updated Jul 23, 2015

It is with pleasure that I declare my support of Paula Bell for Lind Town Council Position #4. Paula has had ten years of experience in this office, and has proven her commitment towards improving the social and financial integrity of the Town of Lind. Paula has been a resident of Lind since 1976. She has dedicated her heart and soul to her teaching career, instilling a sense of pride in the hundreds of students that have passed through her classroom doors. It is with that same dedication that she has chosen to serve her...

  • Former mayor endorses Bell for council

    Updated Jul 16, 2015

The 2015 Primary Election is here Lind, Wash. Has 3 people running for council position No. 4. Candidate No. 1 Richard Baldwin Is not gainfully employed- does not abide by Town of Lind ordinances- has zero experience for the position. Candidate No. 2 John Claypool Has been appointed to a town council position twice in the past. When his appointed terms were up, he never once declared himself a candidate for the position he held. Candidate No. 3 Paula Bell Paula was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Town Council and was elect...

  • Feeling the effects of the ACA program

    Updated Jul 16, 2015

The Supreme Court has ruled on the Red Party’s attempt to trim Obama’s ACA program. Most of it will remain the same. How will this affect us and what will the future bring? On average, premiums for 2015 are between two percent and four percent higher than 2014. However, many younger and healthier people are forgoing insurance and this will make risk pools more costly. After another full year of more costly medical claims some insurers in some states will raise rates. Drastically! They are in business to make money! The ACA...

  • Voting in support of Bell in Lind

    Updated Jul 16, 2015

Town of Lind Residents, As a concerned citizen of Lind I am writing to ask you to re-elect Pula Bell to the town council. I have been attending council meetings for the last year and have noticed that Paula asks questions and is very concerned with the budget. Paula came to Lind in August of 1976 as a high school teacher teaching accounting and typing and has been advocating for the town and school ever since. I ask you to check things out carefully for yourself, then please vote for Paula Bell the clear choice. Jeanette...

  • Washtucna Cemetery appreciates support

    Updated Jul 9, 2015

As we get close to the August election the Washtucna Pioneer Cemetery Board would like to thank the community for their continued, unwavering support of the cemetery. We rely heavily on levy dollars to maintain and operate the cemetery. Last year we raised our plot rates to $500. This will help with our funding, however we want the community to realize that we typically only sell a handful of plots per year. We have decided to increase our plot rate to $800 effective January 1, 2016. This rate will be more in line with what o...

  • An amazing city, Ritzville is!

    Updated Jun 25, 2015

Once again this community came together to help support an amazing gal, Joanne Sipe, aka; JoJo. As you have heard, JoJo has terminal cancer at the young age of 28. She has two young children and a fiancé that are at home with her. Many family and friends are attending to JoJo’s comfort in her final days. Your local Ritzville Eagles Club #2739 put on a Benefit for JoJo.....the attendance was super, the meal was yummy, the auction was fantastic all due to the tremendous generosity of YOU, our Ritzville community. It never ce...

  • Supporting law enforcement officers

    Updated Jun 18, 2015

This last year has brought a lot of negative publicity to the law enforcement profession. Incidents in Ferguson, Baltimore, Texas, Pasco and many more have been all over the national news. Most of the time we don’t hear all the facts in these cases, just what the media feels is important. What we also don’t hear much about is the numerous acts of bravery and heroism that are performed by law enforcement personnel every day, and I would suggest that these greatly outnumber the ones that the media chooses to inform us abo...

  • Memorial Day purpose has changed

    Updated Jun 11, 2015

Memorial Day number 152 has come and gone. The exact number varies as five different years and many different placed claim its origination. They are all connected to the Civil war, freeing slaves, and the horrendous casualties and destruction that resulted. President Johnson was the one who made it a national holiday, although not all of the states honor the day. My first recall of Memorial Day was shortly before Pearl Harbor when families went to the cemeteries to honor ancestors in addition to Veterans. Afterwards, we had a...

  • Finding a rational energy policy

    Updated Jun 4, 2015

There are undoubtedly people calling for the end of civilization to prevent climate change. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to prevent it. There are many sensible ways to do that. In his May 28 column “Looking at Fossil Fuels Through a Different Lens”, Don Brunell states “many activists simply demand an end to the use of fossil fuels now”, and articulates the many ways we use fossil hydrocarbons (oil, gas, coal) in medicine and other aspects of life. Don doesn’t argue against preventing climate change, but calls for a ...
