Washington is home to three resident pods of killer whales that spend the summer feeding in Puget Sound. This year, they seem to be having trouble finding food, and whale advocates blame the dams on the lower Snake River for causing a decrease in fish supply. As pressure mounts to tear out the dams, there will be a public hearing held in Spokane on Monday, Nov. 14, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Historic Davenport Hotel. Eastern Washingtonians have not had a chance to be heard on the issue. As multiple authorities, including... Full story
You need to vote in the up coming election. If you do not, you are saying all those who have given the supreme sacrifice have done it in vain for our country. Okay, you do not like the candidates. Then you run for office and change it. If you do not vote it is a vote for the one who wins. Become active in your government because you have a vote and a right to be heard. If you do not exercise this right then no complaining allowed. You may decide it is to far to walk to drop your ballot in the box, or I do not have time, or I... Full story
How is it that some of us forget so quickly? The House voted to pass a law in 1996 that would have made English the official language of our Great Country! Had the Senate voted to pass the law it would have saved billions of dollars and it would have eliminated numerous problems. This would have been especially true with immigration. Sixty-two senators voted yes but it needed a two thirds majority to pass. Both Washington Senators were against passing it. Patty Murray and Hillary Clinton were against passage. Neither party... It’s not only sad, but disheartening to see the amount of the Clinton’s “power and influence”. When, as a society, did we “decide” that openly blatant corruption was worthy of reward? Meanwhile, honesty and fairness are considered weakness. We want to believe our civic leaders have our best interests at heart. However, Obama has created legislation requiring web information (censored) to fall in-line with the EU’s open society agenda of anti-free speech. Obama considers the move necessary to maintain “international” support f... Full story
I have heard about an issue that is greatly disturbing. Some boy who was sent to Washtucna because he had been a problem somewhere else bought a tazer. Then he tazed three students. The parents were upset. The Superintendent and the school board for some reason sided with the boy over the parents. So the parents want to pull their children out of the school. Whatever is right or wrong, I would not like my child getting tazed then nothing being done about it. I was told he is in 10 day suspension with tutoring. This is not... Full story
Hillary short circuits the truth! Do you suppose that this is what Bill did when he proclaimed “I did not have sexual relations with that women”? I have wondered for many years if they recognized that they had this trait in common when they were introduced in college. We seniors for sure remember Bill as he was the one who balanced the budget (the only time since 1980) by taxing social security. He had been elected because “Read My Lips” president Bush had promised no new taxes. My memory and history both recall this is just... Full story
At the June meeting of H.E. Gritman Senior Center Board it was approved by majority a motion to opt out of the Second Harvest Food Program at this time. It is something that has been discussed numerous times and felt that this was the right time. Since word has gotten around it seems to have caused quite a fury. As a board member, I felt that maybe an explanation is in order. Please know that this was not an easy decision. I have always been in favor of helping the community. Yet, of late, as I see our elder workers becoming...
My husband and I live in Wenatchee and have sped by Ritzville for years on I-90, but it was on several trips to explore the John Wayne Pioneer Trail south of Ritzville that we came to stop and appreciate your town. On our last visit this spring, we were part of a group of 4 bicyclists riding the trail. We picked up a local paper at that time and read the article from May 19, “Residents Weigh in on the Future of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail”. We know that legislators representing the 9th District have opposed the trail, and re...
Congratulations Ritzville you came through again. The four-day garage/rummage sale for The Ritz Theater, held at the Lions Club in June, was a huge success thanks to all of your donations and purchases. The main hall was full of all kinds of stuff (on tables/under tables/in boxes) and the side room was full of good furniture. Thanks to my team, (Yvonne Anderson, Jim Cobb, Lee Egnew, Carly and Liz Gillette, Pud Iltz, Kim Lantis, Janet and Don Sanger, Marge Schoessler and Marsha Smith), for getting it all set up and sold. A...
After perusing the post July 4 edition of the Journal, I am still scratching my head as to the point of the editorial cartoon. (A stunned George Washington looking out over a sky full of problem centered fireworks). Being as I actively serve my former employer concerning government affairs issues, I am very aware of the many troublesome problems facing our state government. Yet as frustrated as your flagged George Washington may be with current events, linking the listed political concerns with a “Happy 4th of July” mon...
If one of the two presidential candidates are elected, we will have set a record for having chosen one of the most disliked candidates in the history of our sharply divided country. Both The Red and The Blue are pleading for their party members to give their candidates a break and forgive their mistakes. With Hillary’s far left policies that will either greatly raise our 19.2 trillion dollar debt or cause an increase in taxes to pay for her expanded social programs. Also, she is considered to be the ultimate insider c...
Ernest Hemingway wrote “Courage is grace under pressure.” This Memorial Day and every day, we remember our heroes who sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for our freedom and safety. Our community really joins together to honor our heroes. I wanted to thank and acknowledge the VFW, the American Legion and all the volunteers who decorated the cemetery and put on the beautiful service. It was especially wonderful to see our youth helping by putting flags on our veteran’s graves. It was an inspiring sight to see the flags flyin... Full story
As a point of clarification; I did not perform a formal inspection of Mr. Oestreich’s 202 West Main property because this issue is not regulated by the Adams County Health Department. I simply stopped by to assess the progress of the repair. Mold, spores and fungi can be a significant health risk, and all owners/landlords need to ensure their buildings have an intact moisture barrier so mold is not a problem. I congratulate Mr. Oestreich for taking responsibility and making needed repairs. For resources and accurate d... Full story
As a parent, volunteer youth coach and community member, it was a sad and disappointing day when our school bond failed to pass. A school is the heart of a community and the window into a community. Failing to pass the bond will have negative short and long term repercussions. I understand not wanting to increase taxes but if WE cannot invest in our own community, how do we expect someone else to? In the short term, taxes will not go up; but in the long term home values will decrease and become more difficult to sell. Why?...
I would like to thank the Journal for it’s accurate reporting of the facts as reported on 202 West Main, a.k.a. the Ritzville Trading Co. Building. As the owner of the property I would like to reassure the Ritzville Community that the reported air quality was within Industry Standards for “reasonably clean” spaces. The Air Quality report stated that the spore counts for the RTC building were 7,100 and 17,000 spores/m3 for the hallway and Ruthie’s treatment room, respectively. These values were 49 percent and 113 percent...
Saturday, May 14, marks the 24th anniversary of one of America’s great days of giving, the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Letter carriers walk through the community everyday, often coming face to face with a sad reality for too many, hunger. So, each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from their customers. These donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to people in Ritzville who need our help. L...
The corner of Eighth and Chelan is an accident waiting to happen. Today it did. It could have been much worse, fortunately there were no pedestrians at the time. Several times every day we see cars speeding through this intersection, failing to yield, failing to stop. The speeders are students as well as parents. Compounding the problem is parents dropping children at the daycare on the corner and children and pets in the street. How about a four way stop to slow everyone down and ensure safety at the corner. It is a school...
I received a large envelope from the U.S. Census Bureau. I was alarmed when I opened it! Five of six pages were printed in a foreign language. I have belonged to U.S. English for many years so I have been aware that The National Council of La Raza has been trying to get our country to become multi-lingual like Canada. It costs billions and constant bickering for Canada to survive this way. Bill Clinton’s executive order 13166 was the first government action toward helping La Raza. Recent polls show that 82 percent of A...
A volunteer opportunity that keeps you engaged with Ritzville’s history, where you meet interesting travelers, an opportunity to widen your circle of friends/co-workers… Who wouldn’t want to say, “Yes, I’ll do it!” Whether you are a teenager, a homemaker, a senior citizen, this is an opportunity to help your hometown. Ritzville’s two museums open soon, May 28 and 29 for alumni weekend. The regular summer schedule, Memorial Day to Labor Day, begins on May 31, noon until 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. You are invited to attend the...
Prior to the recent special election, we were told that the only reason why the Ritzville levy did not pass the first time was because some of the citizens did not understand how necessary everything in that levy was. We were told that if that levy did not pass, children would freeze in the winter, would faint from the heat in spring and autumn, and the buildings would soon be falling down around them. In fact, the situation is so dire that refusing to pass the omnibus levy, because it also included funds for the construction...
Unions are pushing hard for a $15 minimum wage. This will bring more people sneaking across the boarders and large numbers of people losing their jobs. McDonalds has already warned of large numbers losing their jobs. Robots have been developed that will replace them. Schools will have to do a better job of preparing students to earn a living wage! Inflation that followed the Carter recession was prevalent under Reagan’s terms as he stimulated employment. Our nation debt surpassed 1 trillion for the first time. Reagan did n... Full story
As of April 8 we are down to five. Many are talking about conventions which could prove to be interesting. That is because the debaters have been used to point out the weaknesses of each candidate! I am disappointed by the caliber of both red and blue candidates. I would imagine that our trading partners and our enemies are probably wondering if those are the best we have available. Perhaps many potential candidates are concerned that modern vetting would disqualify them from winning and it would be embarrassing. I think...
Making a major investment in the rehabilitation and renovation of Ritzville’s school facilities is a critical step toward the future. The $12,800,000 local bond and the $4,725,000 in state matching funds are vital investments in the big picture. It’s about sustainability and quite frankly its survival. I urge voters to support the Ritzville School Bond. These funds will help position the school district to maintain modern facilities capable of providing the right environment for students and staff in the decades to come. In...
The ballots have been mailed out and we received ours the other day. We will be sitting down and voting YES for the school bond because it is important to have great schools and environments for our students to learn. We have to look to the future to make sure we do everything we can for those next groups of leaders that will hopefully do their part to continue to make this a great community in which to live. I went to school here and made a choice to live here because this is a great place to live. The bond is filled with... Full story
Our pre-election process of selecting two presidential candidates drags on. The mainstream press is jumping at every misspoken statement or word. Bernie and Hillary are showing that they are fantasists. Bernie has stated a tax rate of 90 percent is just right as “this is not a time to think small.” Hillary has been more cautious about stating numbers but her extensive programs are as costly as Bernie’s. The Red candidates are not talking taxes as they seem to be more interested in degrading each other, using school yard...
