The Broncos’ Rose Melville finished her senior cross country season at the 1B/2B State Championships on Nov. 4 at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. Melville finished 12th in the 5,000-meter race in 20 minutes and 35.50 seconds. This was her second-best time all season. After winning three consecutive games, the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos have earned a spot in Crossovers and an opportunity to extend their season. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos honored their seniors by recording a substantial win against the Kettle Falls Bulldogs in the team’s final home game of the season on Oct. 20. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos Volleyball team took a break from their regular season schedule to compete in the Spikefest Tournament in Rosalia, Sept. 16. In pool play, the Lady Broncos split all of their matches, 1-1, against Saint George’s, Colton, Garfield-Palouse and Liberty. For the first time in recent history, there will be an entire team of cross country athletes running in a Broncos uniform this season. This year marks the first season of both a boys and girls cross country team, solely of students from Sprague. Shirts will be sold for a minimum donation of $10. Checks can be made out to Class of 2018. All proceeds from the T-shirt sale will benefit the Silva family. A total of 100 shirts have been ordered. Helen V. Olsen Blackwell died in Ritzville on Aug. 16. She was born in Everett on July 11, 1936, to Donald and Ann Olsen, where she lived and went to school until her parents purchased Florence Hotel in Hot Springs, Montana. She met John Bailey in Montana and married him in 1952. They had four children over their 29-year marriage. They moved to Sprague in 1965 where they raised their children.
