The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos fastpitch softball team began the last leg of their regular season on April 17 with a sweep over Springdale in a nonconference doubleheader, winning 9-7 and 20-16. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague track and field team are preparing for competition as they host their first meet of the season: the Undeberg Invitational. With nearly 600 athletes expected to compete, the Broncos are prepped and ready to be contenders at the annual invitational track meet. Field events begin at 10:45 a.m. at Jimmie Snider Field, followed by running events at 11 a.m. Bronc Boosters will have the concession stand open for the duration of the event. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team faced tough league competition over the past week, losing matches to both Wilbur-Creston and St. George’s. The team is now preparing for the two-day Inland Empire Tournament in Spokane, both to gain experience and see how the team measures up with other area competitors. The Ritzville branch of American Association of Business Women (AAUW) presented four area scholars with scholarships during a banquet at the Emanuel Lutheran Church on April 11. The scholarships were presented in the areas of math, science and technology, with the purpose of encouraging women to pursue degrees in those fields. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague track and field team had two outings over the course of the past week, and returned home with top finishes in multiple events. On April 10, the LRS team traveled to Odessa to compete in the NE 1B/2B League Meet. The LRS women’s team placed fourth with 84 points, while the men’s team placed sixth with 35 points. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team returned to the courts to compete against Harrington, Davenport and Reardan. The weather has provided the Broncos with challenging outings, as well as forcing them to cancel matches, but that has not stopped the team’s success on the court. On April 14, LRS dropped both games in a doubleheader to Liberty, 11-10 and 4-2. The Town of Lind took another step in the beginning stages of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) road improvement work. During the March 27 meeting, Century West Engineering Project Manager Steve Nelson informed the Lind Town Council the company received bids from six contractors for the first phase of the FEMA road improvement project. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague track and field team competed in the Glen Wolf Memorial Invite in Deer Park on Friday, March 30. The LRS women’s team placed fifth 58 points. Senior athlete Rachel Schell, who placed first in the 100-meter and the 200-meter races, led the team in points. Eleanor Marie Schell daughter of Henry and Katherine (Kammerzel) Melcher was born July 3, 1918 at Schrag. She went to county grade school and worked on the farm with her brother and sister doing chores and cooking. Eleanor married Carl John Schell August 29, 1937 at Menno Lutheran Church. Matthew Joseph Johnson, 49, died on March 22 after a short, fierce battle with cancer with his sister, Gina, by his side. Matt was born in Colfax on Jan. 11, 1969. He was raised in Sprague by his parents, Glen and Mary Johnson. Matt graduated from Sprague High School in 1987. After high school, he served in the Army and attended WSU. During her senior season, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague athlete Peyton Curtis accomplished a major feat in high school basketball - scoring over 1,000 career points. Curtis ended her high school career with over 1,300 points, as a well as a three-time Northeast B League selection.
