The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos volleyball team split a pair of matches last week as they hit the halfway point of league play. The Lady Broncos took care of business in their match on Sept. 25, dispatching Reardan in three sets: 25-17, 25-13 and 25-16. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos secured a 20-6 win against Columbia-Burbank during the Homecoming game on Sept. 21. The game served as the final nonleague contest, before the Broncos move into league competition on Sept. 28. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos cross country team began league competition with a Northeast 1B/2B League meet at the Colfax Golf Course on Sept. 18. Linnea Schafer finished 14th in the 2.95-mile womens’ race with a personal record (PR) of 20 minutes and 43.08 seconds. Jordyn Fode completed the event with a PR of 34:45.75. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos volleyball team hit a few mid-season hurdles after they went 0-3 in competition last week. LRS began with a 3-1 loss to defending Northeast 2B South League champions Colfax in a league match on Sept. 18. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos volleyball team opened Northeast 2B South League play on Sept. 13 in Tekoa, with a 3-0 sweep against the Lady Timberwolves. The Lady Broncos controlled the match with scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13. The win improved LRS league record to 2-0 overall. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos cross country team opened the season with a busy week of competition. The Broncos ran in the Wilbur-Creston jamboree at the Big Bend Golf and Country Club on Sept. 5. The team ran a distance of two miles during the race. Although the course was not 5,000 meters, Head Coach Morgan Walker said the jamboree was an opportunity to see the progress athletes have made since the first week of practice. The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos volleyball team began the 2018 season on Sept. 6 with a nonleague win against Columbia-Burbank. LRS defeated the Lady Coyotes in four sets, 25-12, 18-25, 27-25 and 26-24. The Lady Broncos opened with a strong lead to clinch the first set. Wanda Kay Dirks-Hill was born on February 3, 1939 in Lamont, Washington and died from complications related to cancer on August 11, 2018 in Spokane, Washington. Kay graduated from Lamont High School and married Clinton Dirks in September of 1957. Together they raised four children on a farm north of Sprague. As she sent her last child off to college, Kay enrolled in Eastern Washington University and earned her teaching degree. She taught for several years in the Sprague school...
Adams County fire protection districts had another busy week as departments responded to multiple fires last week. On Aug. 9, the Lind Fire Department responded to a field fire on Providence Road, outside of Lind town limits, at around 3 p.m. Lind Fire Chief Kevin Starring said the department deployed five trucks. He noted the fire started from an electrical pole and spread to a nearby field. Adams County Fire Protection Districts No. 1 and No. 2 responded to multiple fires last week. On Aug. 2, ACFPD No. 1 responded to a grass fire on Interstate 90, milepost 239. County Fire Chief Scott Kembel said the agency deployed five trucks and eight firefighters to the scene. Sprague High School administrators have announced its honor roll for the fourth term and second semester of the 2017-18 school year. Freshmen Kelsey Billigmeier and Thomas Schermehorn made the Merit Honor Roll, which ranges from a 3.0 to a 3.49 grade point average (GPA). Sophomore Jade Rios also made the Merit Honor Roll. Gary Dale Carlson, age 71, passed away May 31, 2018, surrounded by family. Gary was born December 27, 1946, to Jack and Georgie Carlson in Puyallup, Washington. He attended and graduated from Sprague High School.
