We can look back on this year and talk about some really good things that happened and several others that weren’t so hot. I think it is important to focus on the good things and learn from the things that weren’t so hot and make the most out of the lives we live. We can look back on some of the great people that passed away this year. We know friends and family that made our lives special and our community a better place to live. We need to focus on how great they were to...

The great philosopher Bob Hope once said, “my idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” He has a point. This time of year, Christians celebrate the birth of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the true ‘reason for the season,’ as we say, and the Christmas season reminds us to serve our neighbors. Part of what makes this season so special, beyond families traveling long distance to gather together, or the mus...
A century ago Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed that people who came to America and wanted to become citizens must be fluent in the use of English. He had a strong belief that language is what binds a country together. The fight for having English as our official language became more serious in 1968. La Raza, an organization that wants us to be multi-lingual who is backed by the blue party, was formed that year. Finally, a Hawaiian senator organized U.S. English in 1983. They presented Congress with a resolution in 1996. A poll was... Full story
I am glad to be sharing legislative updates with you again. From July to December, I and other senators who were seeking re-election had to follow limits set by the Legislature on sending information to constituents. Now that the election is far enough past us, I am allowed to comment on what the results mean, and what is on the agenda for 2017. If there was any doubt left that Governor Jay Inslee is a typical tax-and-spend, big-government liberal, he did away with that earlier this month by proposing the largest tax... Full story
The end of the year is a time of reflection, not only on how the world changed in the past 366 days, but how it might continue to change in the future. The coming of 2017 offers an opportunity to acknowledge some of the greatest scientific achievements of 2016 and how they might impact the New Year. In June, Dr. Gary Steinberg and his Stanford Medicine research team successfully used stem cells to heal stroke victims. Stem cells are unspecialized cells with the potential to be purposefully differentiated into different...
