The Life Care Center of Ritzville staff members are hosting a raffle for a relaxation basket, with proceeds going to the survivors of the typhoon in the Philippines. Raffle tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the Life Care Center. The raffle basket includes two bottles of wine, four hand painted wine glasses, trivet, picture frame, a variety of snacks, and a wide array of bath and body health products. The Adams County Commissioners unanimously approved the 2014-2019 Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) during the morning session on Monday, Dec. 9. During the two previous Monday meetings of Adams County Engineer Scott Yaeger presented the TIP plan explaining the specific differences and changes from the previous years. Yaeger explained seven projects on the current program are proposed programs that funding has not yet been secured for. Funding for the projects comes from a variety of different organizations.... The Lind Chamber of Commerce members completed the judging for the 2013 Lind Lighting Contest in the community on Dec. 12. The Chamber members named three residences as the top decorated homes in Lind and one business. The 2013 winners of the Lind Lighting Contest are Brad and Darlene O’Neill. The deadline for the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) Center for Quality Communities scholarship is March 7. Applications for the scholarship can be picked up at Ritzville City Hall during regular business hours. The AWC Center for Quality Communities scholarship awards four $1,250 scholarships for high school seniors who are actively involved in their community and want to pursue post-secondary education. The LWK Tigercats started off the league games on the right foot after earning two back-to-back wins against Southeast 1B teams last weekend. Being short on practice time didn’t hinder the LRS Broncos as they opened their basketball season with a 42-35 road win over Columbia-Burbank. The team, behind most teams in terms of practice time, proved its players’ talents are solid enough to be competitive right out of the blocks. The Lady Tigercats took to the hardwood for the first time this season to battle against Tekoa-Oakesdale on Friday night. The team had a packed week, playing two league games over the weekend and competing in a nonleague game on Monday. LRS Lady Broncos’ Dalyn Killian battles against a pair of Wilbur-Creston defenders last Thursday in an attempt to score a basket down low. The Lady Broncos lost to WC, 64-62. A couple of years ago I received a phone call from my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Maureen Bourne. She proceeded to tell me that her husband Lloyd had read my column in the Journal that week and he said, “You’ve got to read Dale’s column.” She told me that she read it and then Lloyd insisted that she read it to their grandchildren. Carl J. LeMay died Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata at the age of 78. He was born Jan. 1, 1935, in Nespelem, Wash. Carl worked part time and retired from Grant County Courthouse. Before moving to Ephrata, Carl lived in Washtucna. He was a loving husband and father, and will be deeply missed. On Dec. 5, Jesse Robert Kovash, 36, died at Hospice House of North Idaho after he bravely and courageously fought brain cancer for an extended period of time. He was a loving father, husband, son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. Jesse was born on Aug. 25, 1977, in Livingston, Mont., to Myron Kovash and Kathy (Peterson) McCabe. The Caring Neighbors board recently donated $3,000 to the Lind Elementary School. The donated money was used to help fund the Raising a Reader program at the preschool in Lind. Because we won’t be assembling new state budgets from scratch, the upcoming session is scheduled to last just 60 days rather than the 105 allowed by the constitution in budget-writing years.
