The C.J. Newland American Legion Memorial Hall is being transformed into a Winter Wonderland for the 2014 Community Recognition Night and Auction on Saturday. The Ralston Grange “Veteran’s Appreciation Night” is Wednesday, Nov. 12. The evening is open to the general public and begins with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. at the grange hall in Ralston. The Grange will be providing ham and turkey, beverages and table service with those attending asked to bring a potluck dish to share. Parents of Lind-Ritzville/Sprague High School athletes now have the option of registering their children for sports online through FamilyID, starting with the upcoming winter sports season. FamilyID is a secure web platform that provides an easy way for parents to register their children for athletic programs. The Lind Town Council approved the revised grant application by Stantec at a special meeting called on Monday, Nov. 3. Stantec will submit the grant application to the Department of Ecology this Friday, the town will hear back in February if its project is being considered for funding. If this is the case, council and community members present at the meeting expressed a desire to hold another meeting with Stantec representative Alan Gay in order to inform more of the community about the project and its impact. The Nov. 4 initial ballot count showed Carolyn Benzel with a slight advantage in the District Court Judge race over current incumbent, Adalia A. Hille. With a margin of 30 votes, the race remains too close to be determined in the initial count, and has a chance to be swayed as more ballots are counted in the upcoming days. Benzel received 51.13 percent and 631 votes, while Hille earned 48.87 percent and 603 votes. Two local students received American FFA Degrees at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Receiving the highest award presented by the FFA are Brandon Knodel from Lind and Amber Dainty of Washtucna. Knodel and Dainty were two of 34 students from Washington who received the American FFA Degree. An average of 3,500 American Degrees are presented each year, and that number represents less than half of one percent of all FFA members, making it one of the organization’s highest honors. CF Industries donated $1,500 to go towards scholarships for the Washington State University Extension 4-H Teen Conference. The money was donated with preference to 4-H members from Lincoln and Adams counties. The conference is held each year fro students eighth to 12th grade. In their final game of the regular season the Broncos fell behind early to the Colfax Bulldogs. Despite being short five starting players and down 6-13 at the half the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague football team was able to pull together and overcome the Bulldogs 27-25. Verna Selcho Taylor, 76 of Lyman SC, died on Monday, Nov. 3. Verna was the beloved wife of Jerry A. Taylor Sr. and the devoted daughter of the late John and Esther Selcho. Verna was retired from Bell South and Taylor Auto Sales. She made enormous contributions to the town of Lyman as, first, a councilwoman and, secondly, as Mayor. The library and water treatment plant are two examples of her dedication to providing much needed services to the citizens of Lyman. Verna was a treasured member of First Baptist Church in Lyman.... At the District Tournament on Nov. 1 the Lady Broncos got off to a difficult start losing their first match against the Reardan Indians in four sets. “We should have beat them,” Head coach Cari Galbreath said. The Broncos defeated the Indians in three sets at their Senior Night game on Oct. 28 before the tournament.
