The race for mayor for the City of Ritzville is an odd one. Incumbent mayor Linda Kadlec is a write-in candidate. When the filing period was open, she signed on to run for a second term as mayor. When two other candidates filed, she opted to withdraw from the race. The next twist came when one of the candidates withdrew as well. Kadlec then decided she had made a mistake and wanted to seek re-election. The current mayor is a 20-year veteran of city hall, having served 16...

A rivalry game is just that, whether you are in contention for a playoff game or not. That’s how the LaCrosse-Washtucna Tigercats approached Friday’s battle with St. John-Endicott. The Tigercats had suffered several close losses, enough to bounce them out of playoff contention. But the Friday night battle was more about pride and bragging rights between a pair of long-time rivals. The Tigercats reigned supreme Friday, rolling to a 46-0 thrashing. “Our kids were hungry,” head coach Jeff Nelson said. We have been a little...

I’ve done this long enough to honestly say that when I don’t have a topic to fill a column I usually like to do a weekend wrap up of things that happened and give my take on them. A lot of times these comments actually make sense. So here goes nothing! The LRS Broncos win a big game in Reardan. Now I would hazard a guess that a lot of Broncos fans would have thought that LRS would have been able to take care of the Indians by a couple of touchdowns or so. But Reardan is ver...
When Gov. Chris Gregoire learned through a news story in The Olympian that the State Lottery Commission had bought itself a $49,000 Mercedes van to travel around in promoting ticket sales, she put the kibosh on it fast. The state is still so broke she had just called a special session of the legislature for November and she made clear this was no time for the lottery folks to be gallivanting around in a van they also were having equipped with gadgets for a total cost of $124,000. Sell it, she ordered, and make sure you get...
The dictionary defines “deadbeat” as someone who deliberately avoids paying their bills. It’s an unflattering label, but for Illinois, it’s now their unofficial new nickname: the Deadbeat State. Wracked by corruption and drowning in debt, the state of Illinois has surpassed California as the national poster child for fiscal mismanagement. In desperation last January, state lawmakers approved a massive increase in the state’s personal and corporate income taxes. Individual income taxes rose by 66 percent while corporate...
