  • Unopposed candidates are still qualified

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Mr. Boyer, I am terribly disappointed in you and your letter to the editor. You went ahead and made an assumption without bothering to talk to the people who you are slandering. I know you never asked me how or why the Mayor chose me to fill in on the council. Do you think the Mayor closed her eyes and just pulled a name out of a hat? I would think at the very least you would ask us why we are there? Anyone that knows me, knows that I love this town, I have since I moved here. Love the small town feel and it’s people. The d...

  • Belittling another candidate hinders a campaign

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

The letter we all received regarding one of our council members, Paula Bell, is dirty politicking at best. It disgraces a woman who has done a great job serving our community and who truly has the best interest of Lind at heart. Myself, along with anyone I have ever talked to know that if there is ever a problem they wish to address, it can be taken to Paula Bell and she will take it up with the correct person or persons. I hope to serve the community with a credited and seasoned council member like Paula for as many years...

  • Negative campaigning will backfire

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

It is very disturbing that you, Citizens for Positive Progress, chose a route of dirty politics through negative campaigning. Lind voters received an anonymous letter today. The letter put a negative focus on not only the targeted council member, but also indirectly “slammed” the others who sit on that board with her. Shame on you! We also noted that your return address was at PO Box No. 000. This ‘secretive’ address is also very meaningless as there is no such PO Box in Lind. Just curious why you didn’t sign your names on...

  • Supporting Bell for Town Council

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

As members of the Lind community, we confidently support Paula Bell for re-election to the Town of Lind No. 4 Position. Paula is well-known for her commitment to accountability in our local Town government. She is a hard-working council member who puts hours of her own time into researching the proper rules and laws. Paula makes sure she is doing the best job possible and is not afraid of doing what is right, even if it is not popular. Her years of experience make her the best choice for her position. Please mark your...

  • Public letters should be signed

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

To: Citizens for Positive Progress Just a note: I am a Lind citizen and have been for 64 years. I am NOT on the list of Citizens for Positive Progress. If you are brave enough to send a letter through the mail, then be sure you have a legitimate post office box number. I am NOT ashamed to put my name on anything I send out to the public and want them to read! My name is: Bill Wills, Lind...

  • Voting for Claypool to bring change

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

While it is nice to support a friend, most of those writing in support of Paula Bell for Lind Council Position 4 have not attended council meetings. Paula Bell does her research and comes to council with questions and comments like - the town crew’s trucks are not getting highway MPG while driving around town. No vehicles get highway MPG in town. Too much time has been spent on the non-existent issues she brings to the table. John Claypool’s business experience, vision for Lind’s future, and intelligent professionalism will... Full story

  • Trooper Burt goes beyond the call of duty

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

I would like everyone in the Columbia Basin to know that there is a very wonderful State Patrolman, his name is officer “Burt”, a Ritzville State Trooper. “A friend” or so I thought got me lost, you see I’m from Othello. Then he took my money, my jacket, my flashlight. I thought he was going for gas. There was not a house or car in sight. It was 3 or 4 in the morning and he, my friend, left me all alone on the side of the road with no gas, in the middle of I don’t know where. A trucker came by and stopped and I’m in hyst...

  • Citizens for Positive Progress letter unacceptable

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

As I rushed home from work yesterday, I paused to check my mail, stuffed the stack of seemingly unimportant items in my purse, and raced home to pick up my kids and off to Wilbur we went—my daughter’s volleyball game would begin in an hour. As I sat between games, I leafed through the mail, opening one from “Citizens for Positive Progress.” As I read, my mouth dropped open and a sick feeling churned in my stomach. This letter was in support of John Claypool for City Council Position No. 4, and instead of simply outlining his... Full story

  • “Dirty politics” don’t win elections

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Talk about dirty politics! Paula’s opponent has won the title. Paula Bell has run a clean campaign sticking with the matters and not badmouthing anybody. Paula has done a great job for the Town of Lind. She, as a conscientious member of the Council, goes through the budget thoroughly identifying errors and questioning expenses. When an expense is to be made, she checks the allotment in the budget for that item or service. Paula votes yay or nay, whichever she feels is in the best interest of the Town. Mentioning voting in t... Full story

  • Supporting Claypool for Lind Town Council

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Lind voters have an important choice to make in this year’s election of Town Council members. Having served on the Council, I appreciate the sacrifice of time, energy and attention serving on the Council entails, and applaud all who are willing to fill those important seats. Two respected and appreciated individuals are running for Council Position 4, John Claypool and Paula Bell. Except for a small sign on the community bulletin board, the Claypool campaign has been virtually non--existent. John fails in the self--promotio...

  • Syrian refugee crisis requires cautious compassion

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

Hardly a day goes by without Americans seeing horrific news stories on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The unstable security situation due to terrorism and civil war has destabilized the region and created a tide of refugees sweeping from the Middle East and Africa into Europe. The U.S. should respond to the refugee crisis deliberately and with great caution, taking every safeguard measure and keeping the security of our homeland as our foremost priority. Migrants and refugees have overwhelmed the capacity of many Euro... Full story

  • EPA overreach not what scoop intended

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Oct 22, 2015

More than 40 years ago, Washington’s Sen. Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson authored the National Environmental Policy Act, which led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When President Richard Nixon signed the landmark legislation into law on Jan. 1, 1970, he installed Bill Ruckelshaus as the first EPA administrator to implement the new statute and begin aggressively cleaning up the nation’s air, water and hazardous waste sites. Unfortunately, over the decades, things have changed. Today, EPA’s tendency... Full story

  • Lady Broncos have a tough week against Davenport, Kittitas

    Rachel Plager|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The Lady Broncos played two hard fought games on the road last week with both ending in losses. The teams stayed in the games with close scores in both matches but were unable to secure wins mostly due to serving errors. In the first match of last week on Thursday against Davenport they fell to the Lady Gorillas with set scores of: 25-18, 17-25, 17-25, 9-25. This game was a true battle in the first three sets with 19 kills and 32 digs from the Lady Broncos. By the fourth and final set the team was unable to come together and... Full story

  • Tough to watch

    Dale Anderson|Updated Oct 22, 2015

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The Seahawks were supposed to run through their opponents like a hot knife through butter and a third consecutive Super Bowl was supposed to be the result. All we had to do was look back on what happened a year ago when Seattle started 3-4 and the doubters were wondering what the heck was going on with our beloved team. Then the Hawks went 9-1 to finish the season and had home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Now turn the page to 2... Full story

  • Ralston Grange donates dictionaries

    Updated Oct 22, 2015

The Ralston Grange No. 943 donated dictionaries to third grade students in Ritzville, Lind and Benge in October. A total of 17 Lind students and 30 Ritzville students received the dictionaries. This is the 10th year that the Ralston Grange has participated in the Words for Thirds program. • Lady T-cats lose Homecoming match in five sets against Touchet

    Katelin Davidson|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus Lady Tigercats competed in two league matches last week, and faced hard fought losses against Colton and Touchet. The losses also eliminated the Lady Tigercats’ changes of competing in Districts this year, as only the top six teams in the league are eligible to compete. The Lady Tigercats first went on the road to face Colton on Oct. 13. The Colton Lady Wildcats defeated the LWK team in three sets with scores of 23-25, 16-25, 14-25. In the f...

  • LRS Broncos trample Reardan in home game

    Katelin Davidson|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos continued their undefeated run this season after running to a 47-7 win against league rivals, the Reardan Indians. The Broncos hosted the Indians on Oct. 16, and quickly proved why they are the top-ranked team in the league. After kicking off to Reardan, the Broncos gained possession at their own 26-yard line early in the first quarter. On the first Broncos play of the game, Jacob Saetre ran the ball for 74 yards and the first LRS touchdown.... Full story

  • Lind-Ritzville High School students attend Coeur d’Alene Symphony on Oct. 10

Emma Aldrich, LRHS Student Correspondent|Updated Oct 22, 2015

In order to give students more exposure to the fine arts, members of the Lind-Ritzville High School (LRHS) band took a field trip to the Coeur d’Alene Symphony on Saturday, Oct. 10. The students who were able to attend enjoyed the opportunity to listen to professionals who share their passion, including their band director, Jennifer York, who has been a member of the Coeur d’Alene symphony since 2003, and became principal bassoonist in 2005. Abby Gering, a student who participated on the trip, said, “I mainly wanted to go be... Full story
