But do you know how old your smoke alarms are? If you’re like most people, you’re probably not so sure. A recent survey conducted by NFPA revealed that only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced. That lack of awareness is a con...

  • Fond Memories

    Dale Anderson|Updated Oct 20, 2016

Last month before the first game of the season I was walking into Jimmie Snider Field and was talking with a member of the class of 1967 who was also a member of the last undefeated Ritzville High School football team. He happened to be a senior on that team. I said to him, “It was 50 years ago when that 1966 team went undefeated!” He said, “I know. I can’t believe that it has been 50 years, which makes me feel old” I said, “It’s not about the years it’s about that great team...

  • Protect families from stealth death tax

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Oct 20, 2016

The Internal Revenue Service is at it again, this time targeting farmers, ranchers, and other businesses operated by families. It may not be politically-motivated targeting, but the IRS is now pushing a new rule that would revise the valuation of family-operated businesses, resulting in a higher tax burden when a family member passes away. In Congress, I proudly voted to repeal the onerous death tax because I have seen firsthand that it prevents hardworking Americans from passing on the fruits of their labor to the next...

  • Timber sales money required for school construction

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Oct 20, 2016

Uncoupling state timber sales revenue from public school construction funding doesn’t make sense. It is akin to killing the goose laying the golden eggs. That idea came up during this year’s campaign for public lands commissioner. Democrat Hilary Franz, a Seattle environmental attorney, and Republican Steve McLaughlin, a retired Navy Commander, are the finalists. Franz stated her position in a candidate questionnaire, according to the business publication, Lens. She wrote the state mandate to use revenue from timber sal...

    Updated Oct 20, 2016

How is it that some of us forget so quickly? The House voted to pass a law in 1996 that would have made English the official language of our Great Country! Had the Senate voted to pass the law it would have saved billions of dollars and it would have eliminated numerous problems. This would have been especially true with immigration. Sixty-two senators voted yes but it needed a two thirds majority to pass. Both Washington Senators were against passing it. Patty Murray and Hillary Clinton were against passage. Neither party...
