The Washtucna Lions Club bingo will begin Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Lion’s Den at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. for soup, sandwich, and visiting. The annual Mennonite Country Auction and Relief Sale is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 7. The event has been held in Ritzville on the first Saturday of October for the past 40 years, and is expecting to welcome even more visitors to the central location. During their Sept. 26 meeting, the Lind Town Council approved an ordinance stating the Town of Lind will vacate Lafayette Road. At the July 27 Lind Town Council meeting, resident Jennifer Anderson requested the Town vacate Lafayette Road and make it a private road. At the meeting, Anderson explained the purpose of her request was to protect her property from thoroughfare traffic. The 25th Annual East Adams County Healthcare Foundation Auction traveled back in time to revisit the Roaring ‘20s in style. The majority of those in attendance dressed in their best 1920s garb to celebrate a night out on the town and help raise money for the Foundation. The Broncos Cross Country team resumed their season in a 2B League race held at the Tekoa Golf Course on Sept. 26. Rose Melville won the girls’ 5,000 meters varsity race with a time of 21 minutes and 57.9 seconds, 11 seconds faster than second-place winner Maia Dykstra of Asotin. The Lind-Ritzville Middle School had their first day of school on Aug. 28 and started the day off with an assembly discussing the theme of the year: Unity. The Bulldog volleyball and football teams had their first practice on Aug. 29. The volleyball team had their first game of the year on Sept. 18 and played against the Reardan Indians. Since the inaugural year in 2014, the LRHS Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Club has experienced a 300 percent increase in membership. At a special Sept. 26 meeting of the Ritzville Museum Volunteers at the Burroughs’ Home, Liz Gillette and Gretchen Snyder both received Volunteer of the Year awards, while Darlene “Dottie” Telecky was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame. The Lind-Ritzville FFA trap shooting team is gearing up for another season. The team will be competing on the following dates for the 2017-18 season. The team starts District 9 on Oct. 7 in Odessa, followed by a contest in Warden on Oct. 21. The Lind and Ritzville School Boards met on Sept. 25 to hear presentations from administrators regarding the first month of school for the Lind-Ritzville Cooperative School District. The Frontier Girls are holding the annual People Helping Pantries Food Drive, in conjunction with the sponsoring organization, the Ritzville Eagles. The Ritzville Frontier Girls Troop No. 372 will be at Harvest Foods on Oct. 5–6 from 4-6 p.m. Additional non-perishable food donations may be made throughout the month of October at the Eagles. Robert Schaefer was born on a farm in Washtucna on July 26, 1932. He died in Spokane on Sept. 24. He graduated from Washtucna High School before he served in the Army for two years. Robert lived near Ritzville. It was five miles towards Washtucna and he worked on the farm, but he didn’t like it. He met Jeanette at O.B.’s Café where she was a waitress. John Christopher Doherty died peacefully in Anacortes on Sept. 23 with his family by his side. He was born on Jan. 4, 1938, in Houston, Texas, to Anna and Francis Doherty. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He was known to many as just “Texas John” through his barbecue and catering business. John enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.
