  • Community volunteers unite to grant a wish

    Katelin Davidson|Updated Sep 18, 2014

At eight years old, Jericho and his family shared a wish: the wish for the young boy to be able to walk. With help from the Wishing Star Foundation, two local volunteers granted the wish last month. Jericho was born with a rare brain disorder called lissencephaly, otherwise known as “smooth brain.” The disorder causes seizures and for the young boy to be unable to speak or walk unassisted. While Jericho has a difficult time communicating with others, his mother Jackie und...

  • Falsities are hindering judicial campaign

    Updated Sep 18, 2014

Judicial campaigns are generally bland. Unfortunately, the race for Ritzville District Court Judge has been contaminated by the Prosecuting Attorney and his Deputy Prosecutor. In judicial campaigns there are rules to be followed by the individual attorneys involved. These rules apply to a sitting judge and a candidate for a judicial position. RPC (Rules of Professional Conduct) 8.2(a) states: “A lawyer shall not make a statement that the lawyer knows to be false or with reckless disregard as to its truth or falsity c... Full story

  • Former Sheriff voices support for Benzel

    Updated Sep 18, 2014

This letter is in support of Carolyn Benzel for Ritzville District Court Judge. I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Carolyn for about 7 years. I first met her as a Deputy Prosecutor with Grant County. I had worked on a case that crossed into Grant County. Carolyn was very professional and dedicated to her job. Later, Carolyn came to the Adams County and I found her to be very easy to work with. Carolyn was able to balance the job of prosecutor and the wants of law enforcement, with the goal to have a proper...

  • Campaign sign removal is unprofessional

    Updated Sep 18, 2014

I have to say how very disappointed I am with certain individuals in our community that feel the need to remove and destroy campaign signs that are posted on private property or anywhere for that matter. I have heard it is illegal to destroy or remove campaign signs, unless you are the one who posted them or are the candidate. I am personally offended that the sign I had in my own yard, supporting the candidate of my choice, was removed during the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 28, while I was out at the Wheat Land...

  • Attend informational meetings for hospital bond

    Updated Sep 18, 2014

The other night I was sitting in my chair when I heard MedStar come in. I always stop what I am doing and say a prayer for the patient, family members, EMTs, doctors, nurses and MedStar staff. A few years ago it was my husband that took off in the helicopter and it reminded me how blessed we are to have trained help and a place for MedStar to land. The thought of losing something so important for all of us makes me shudder. Let’s put the past behind us and support the hospital bond in the coming election. Get to one of the m... Full story

  • I’ve seen a lot

    Dale Anderson|Updated Sep 18, 2014

It occurred to me the other day that I’d witnessed a lot of sporting events. I’m not one of those that have the ability to see more than one game on a screen and I really wouldn’t want to. But I can use my remote control and find six or so games that I can turn to during a commercial break, halftime or when the game has long been decided in a blowout. I remember when I was a young sports fan in the early 1960’s when there was usually only one game on TV, in black and white a... Full story

  • Is an All-Green Energy Strategy Worth the Cost?

    Don C. Brunell, Washington Business Commentator|Updated Sep 18, 2014

What if we could peer into the future and see the consequences of the decisions we make today? In a way, we can. According to Washington state economists, a carbon tax high enough to achieve Gov. Inslee’s stated climate change goals would increase gasoline prices almost 60 percent over time and raise natural gas prices – currently our most affordable energy – nearly 35 percent. The carbon tax is only one part of Inslee’s climate change agenda. How much will the rest of it cost Washington families? At this point, we don’t k...

  • Tree rings of faith

Pastor Steve Schofstoll, Lind Calvary Assembly of God|Updated Sep 18, 2014

One of my favorite things about living in Eastern Washington is the weather. It’s my opinion that there are very few parts of the country that can compare with the Inland Northwest’s weather. Even the places I’ve lived overseas cannot match what we are blessed with here in our little corner of the world. Along with the dry climate and the fact that we experience relatively few weather-related disasters (tornados, floods, hurricanes, etc.), I love the change of seasons. As the summer now draws to an end with shorter days and c... Full story
