Well once again Ritzville was hit with one of those wind storms. They tell us these are called a “haboob” a rolling dirt storm and it certainly did its share of damage —though not to the extent of the previous one. Clean up was required pretty much all over the city and once again this community has pulled together to help with these efforts. A couple weeks have passed since our 2014 Annual Women’s Golf Tournament, which is cleverly entitled “Puting On The Ritz”. For four years running (and this is my fourth tournament), my partner and I came in last. This year, that unfortunate and tested friend was Patty. It was her first tournament and, were she a lesser person, could have been her last. Helen (Hannahs) Franks died peacefully on Friday, August 29 at the age of 97. Helen was born on March 19, 1917 to John and Margaret Kries in Genesee. She spent her childhood there with her five siblings before moving to Lewiston to become a registered nurse. She married Walter (Sonny) Hannahs in 1938 and began raising her family of five children. Helen and Sonny lived in Soap Lake and Spokane before settling in Waterville, where they lived until 1966. She worked at the Waterville Hospital during that time and is still...

Alice Elizabeth (Motley) Phillips died at her home in Lind on August 16 at the age of 97. She was born February 25, 1917 to William and Mina (Shining) Motley at the family farm located between Cunningham and Othello. Alice grew up in Lind and attended Lind High School, graduating in 1935.
