The real grass roots Friends of EARH are the folks who faithfully supported the maintenance and operations levies, while the hospital commissioners who were elected to serve these citizen taxpayers, were quietly stashing cash and systematically neglecting maintenance. “The building did it” campaign failed. Adult individuals in our community told strange tales claiming the hospital was 60 years old and the public was expected to stampede to the ballot box to reinforce the fiction that hospital buildings were not meant to las...

For a lot of us that live here in Ritzville, Division and Seventh Street will never be the same especially after the final brick is cleaned up from the site of Old RHS. For those of us living here, we understand this project is a long time coming. For those alums who live far away it is a sad time for them. Well, it is also sad for us living here but quite necessary. For 30 years, there was a hope that the building would get a second life as an apartment complex, community...
The fact that I was at the Benton-Franklin fair last weekend means two things. First, we’re through with harvest – and second, fair season in our part of the state is in full swing. For the next month there’s at least one fair in a 9th District community each weekend, starting with Ritzville this week, then Connell and Colfax, then Othello, then Rockford. If the trip to the Kennewick fairgrounds last Saturday didn’t fit your schedule, I hope you’ll take in another fair in our region this year. Nothing celebrates our agric...
There’s an old saying, “There’s more than one way to catch a cat.” It means, if you don’t succeed one way, try again using a different strategy. In this case, the “cat” is the Columbia River – or more precisely, eliminating the dams and commercial use of the river. The activists’ vision of a wild, free-flowing Columbia River has great emotional appeal, but it would have dire consequences for our state. Those dams produce 75 percent of our electricity, making Washington the largest producer of clean, affordable hydrop...
