  • As the calendar turns

    Dale Anderson|Updated Aug 27, 2015

I, for one, think this has been a very long summer. The heat came early and seemed to stay much longer than usual. Even when the heat went away for a while, it returned and those triple digit temperatures and made it difficult to do much of anything outside. It seems the older I get the wimpier I become. Harvest was two or three weeks early, which is never a good sign. So when I thought it was late July it was actually just after the 4th. It was tough to get excited about...

  • Promoting potato consumption in China

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Aug 27, 2015

  • Political motives to blame for wildfires

    Updated Aug 27, 2015

Now take into account all the dead wildlife, owls, birds, deer, fox, bear, wolves, coyotes and salmon with loss of habitat. Was it political not to have selective log and hire crews to cut out dead heads and clean the forest floors. This is what I think as there is no rain on the west side or east side, it’s not water warming it’s the...

Congress must now take action to approve legislative reforms to address future slowdowns to reduce the crippling threat they pose to our economy. I have heard directly from affected manufacturers...

Stevie Coon, Retired WLCF Plants and Flowers Superintendent|Updated Aug 27, 2015

Do you have some beautiful Dahlias this year? Maybe Gladiolas or Petunias that catch your eye? This might just be a good year to plan on entering flowers in the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair. There are really two or three important things to remember when deciding what flowers to bring to the fair. Judges do follow the directions that appear in the Exhibitors’ Guide. For example: Dahlias should have two or four leaves and no buds. Utilize a clean knife to remove side buds well before showing. The center of the flower sho...
