    The deadline to register students for Flag Football is Wednesday, Aug. 30. For all incoming students between kindergarten and sixth grade, 5-12 years of age, the registration fee if $35.     The LaCrosse Schools will be hosting their annual community open house and welcome back dinner on Monday, Aug. 28. Children who love to solve riddles can visit one of the Ritzville Public Library’s Escape Games, Thursday through Saturday, at the old sheep barn.     The Ritzville Community Parade is on Saturday, Sept. 2, beginning at 11 a.m. Entry forms can be picked up at the City of Ritzville office, and it is asked that forms be submitted by Monday, Aug. 28.     The Washington State Patrol (WSP) in conjunction with 145 other law enforcement agencies around the state will have extra DUI patrols out from Aug. 18 through Sept. 4. During 2016, impaired drivers were involved in crashes that resulted in 277 deaths and another 286 serious injuries. The WSP arrested 12,949 impaired drivers last year.     During their Aug. 15 meeting, the Ritzville City Council unanimously approved a new logo and seal for the City.     John D. (Jack) Shimek, born in Pasco on April 28, 1928, died in Spokane on Aug. 15. One of four children born to John E. and Eunice Howton Shimek of Kahlotus, Jack spent most of his life on the family farm in Lind. Graduating from high school in 1947, he attended trade school in Spokane where he met and married Clara Falco Shimek in 1948.     Roy Gallion, age 85, died Aug. 16 at the North Central Care Center in Spokane. Roy was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Malta, Montana, to parents William and Lucille (Baker) Gallion. He had three sisters and one brother. Roy’s father, William, was a heavy equipment operator following his work. In 1941, the Gallion family left Montana for employment in Oregon, California, back to Oregon and then to Washington.
