On Aug. 12, I played in my third annual Ritzville Women’s’ Golf Tournament. I partnered with Harriet, a woman of humor, tolerance and grace, which is how she survived eighteen holes with me. The experience could have devastated a lesser person. Debbie and Elke from Quincy completed our foursome. We very much enjoyed playing with them. They didn’t seem bothered by that day’s feels-like-triple-digits scorching heat, but that’s no surprise since it’s hot enough in Quincy to produce solar flares. They carried the same handic...

I have some pretty hectic days. Some make me wonder why I didn’t opt for a job that simply required a 40-hour work week and a time clock. To be honest, some of my days are riddled with scheduled appointments and infused with unexpected surprises. The daily schedule is always fluid and sometimes completely derailed by unexpected events. For instance, I hadn’t really planned on walking around the upper floors of the old high school on Monday or I would have opted for boots instead of dress shoes and brought a flashlight to go...

She spent her childhood on her parent’s cattle ranch north of Ritzville along Crab Creek. She attended Ritzville schools from kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated from Ritzville High School in 1977. She was an exceptional student, a teacher’s delight and always one to be counted upon. She was captain of...

There are plenty of fans, which includes me a time or two years ago, that believe by merely paying the price of admission it allows said fan to act out in any imposing way short of violent outburst. On Sunday, in a game between the Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants, a fan threw a banana toward Oriole centerfielder Adam Jones. Jones is an African-American, and acts such as this do have racial overtones. To have this type of act happen in what is arguably the most...
