The fall sports orientation meeting for Lind-Ritzville/Sprague high school and middle school parents and athletes is being held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m. in Gilson Gymnasium. The informational meeting serves as an opportunity for local athletes to turn in paperwork, and pay athletic and other school fees. A new contest has been created for the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair this year to attract participants young and old. A marshmallow catapult contest has been created to wrap up the weekend events. Contestants are required to build a swing arm catapult capable of launching a standard-sized marshmallow. The Ritzville Museum Volunteers are hosting a golf scramble tournament to benefit the local museums, the Train Depot and the Dr. Frank R. Burroughs’ Home and Museum. The City of Ritzville is the new owner of the old high school on Seventh Avenue. Tuesday Mayor Linda Kadlec was informed by the city’s legal firm that the judge had signed the order and the documents had been recorded, clearing the way for the city to proceed with demolition of the building. The city has retained Eastside Wood Recycling to demolish the building. Kadlec said the contractor has assured the city that work can begin by Friday. Ten combines and crews from several farms turned out Tuesday to harvest 558 acres of wheat for Harold Hennings and his family.
