    Irrigation water demands are beginning to decline and, as in past years, the East Columbia Basin Irrigation District will soon scale back ditchrider service from six days to five days per week. Full Saturday service will be provided through Sept. 3. After that date, ditchrider service will only be available Monday through Friday and the Moses Lake and Othello Watermaster Offices will be closed on weekends.     The Ritzville City Council approved three applications through the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) for construction projects at their meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The meeting began with Clerk/Treasurer Kris Robbins presenting the council with Show Cause hearings homes in the area whose yard conditions are a concern to the council and the public.   • Massive fires destroy 25,000 acres near Palouse Falls

    Fire season struck Washtucna leaving the local fire department battling blazes throughout their district. Within a four-day period, they responded to three separate calls of fires located on CRP grounds. Thursday’s fire began with a hay truck fire on State Route 26 outside of Hooper. As the truck became consumed by flames, the fire spread into the CRP and farm ground in the surrounding area.     Laura R. Kanzler, 93, a resident of Ritzville, died July 25, at East Adams Care Center. Laura was born March 19, 1923, to George and Lois Lambert (Granberg) in Kellogg, Idaho. She attended high school in Coeur d’ Alene and continued her education at a business College in Spokane. She married Oscar Kanzler March 31, 1946, and they lived in Spokane a year and a half before moving to Ritzville.     On the morning of Aug. 2, Raymond Arthur Stromberger left us suddenly due to a heart attack. Ray was born Nov. 24, 1950, to Arthur and Dorothy (Krause) Stromberger. He graduated from Sprague High School in1968 and attended EWSC on a basketball scholarship for two years. He worked on the family farm and did some professional modeling.     John Wellsandt died at his home on July 21 with his wife by his side. John was born in Ritzville and graduated from WSU as a CPA. After college he worked for Arthur Anderson in Seattle. He eventually went back to the family farm where he and his brother, Don, were third-generation wheat farmers. He loved the challenge of farming. He retired in 1993. John loved the outdoors.
