A history of the bank was published in The Journal in a four-page section that was included in the newspaper’s Dec. 7, 1989, edition as the bank announced its Dec. 15, 1989, grand opening of the Ritzville branch. An explanation of the bank’s beginnings was described in the following manner: “This was the result of two years of hard work by many groups and individuals attempting to establish an independently owned and operated bank in Colfax. All 14 of the origi...

To the editor, (Editor’s note: This letter was submitted to the newspaper on Sunday, Aug. 7.) We arrived in Ritzville in 1998 as customers of Columbia State Bank. We were sad not to be able to be daily Columbia Bank customers as Columbia Bank was perfect as banks an be. We kept our accounts open at Columbia Bank for some time as we needed to have the use of a debit card and Bank of Whitman did not have them. We have loved and do love the tellers and other support staff of the Bank of Whitman. There are none better. We hope C...
To the editor, There are really two or three important things to remember when deciding what flowers to bring to a fair. Judges really do follow the directions that appear in the Premium Book. For example: Dahlias should have two or four leaves and no buds. Utilize a clean knife to remove side buds well before showing. The center of the plant should show only in single or collarette varieties. Will your flower be at the proper stage of bloom when the judge sees it at the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair that will be on Thursday,...

After several years of reading about every little thing that is wrong with this community and the people in it, I am surprised anyone still lives here. And unfortunately people have left and some won’t come because of all the negative press they read. It is no wonder no one really wants to run for office, unless they are upset about something. And the school board couldn’t even fill all the positions. I am not saying this community doesn’t have its share of problems; we do...

They never thought about that one; it stands for the East Adams Rural Hospital Strategic Plan (2011-2015). It is the plan “Achieving excellence through exceptional quality.” What is wrong with providing some “exceptional quality” with a list of the meaning of an acronym? At least...
