    The Wheat Land Communities’ Fair Board is in search of karaoke singers who are interested in performing on Thursday, Aug. 30. The event will run from 6-8 p.m. at the Ritzville Lions Club Amphitheatre on the fairgrounds. Fair coordinators are hosting a Superintendent Meeting on Sunday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Knuth Building. All department superintendents are requested to attend.     This year’s Wheat Land Communities’ Fair is just around the corner and there is a new contest available in the Baking department. Linda Erdman, Baking Superintendent, is excited to announce the new contest, which is sponsored by Shepherd’s Grain. To be eligible for this award, the exhibitor must use Shepherd’s Grain Flour in their baking entry. As proof of use, the empty bag of Shepherd’s Grain Flour must be attached to the finished product.   • Photography department undergoes changes

    People planning on exhibiting in the Photography department this year at the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair should reference the rules and changes in section categories listed in the Exhibitors’ Guide. Photos, as in the past, must be 8-inch by 10-inch and mounted securely on either an 11-inch by 14-inch mount board or mat. No poster board, frames or glass will be allowed.   • School boards plan for upcoming year with approval of bids, budget

    The monthly meeting for the Lind and Ritzville School Boards resulted in the approval of budgets, as well as accepting milk, fuel and bread bids for the local districts. The Boards met on July 26 to discuss plans for the upcoming school year, and prepare for the upcoming consolidation of students in the middle school and high school.   • Inslee declares state of emergency for damaged Danekas overpass

    In an Aug. 2 news release, Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee issued a proclamation for Adams County to assist the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) make emergency repairs to the Danekas Road Bridge over Interstate 90 near Ritzville. The proclamation also requests federal assistance to help pay the cost for the repair. A semi-truck transporting an excavator struck the bridge while traveling under it on July 10.   • Commissioners receive update on truck, transfer station fires

    At the Aug. 6 meeting, the Adams County Commissioners received updates on the two fires involving Public Works property. One of the incidents related to a semi-trailer transporting municipal solid waste that had caught fire in Boardman, Oregon, on July 31. The other was an Aug. 5 fire at the Bruce Transfer Station that destroyed the recycling center.     Both local Maintenance and Operations (M&O) levies are passing for Adams County Park and Recreation Districts No. 3 and No. 4 after the initial Primary Election count on Aug. 7. In the initial count, 1,553 ballots were tabulated, attributed for 23.16 percent of voters.     Adams County Fire Protection Districts No. 1 and No. 2 responded to multiple fires last week. On Aug. 2, ACFPD No. 1 responded to a grass fire on Interstate 90, milepost 239. County Fire Chief Scott Kembel said the agency deployed five trucks and eight firefighters to the scene.
