  • Issues with school state testing

    Updated Aug 6, 2015

What do larger school districts do when they have too many seniors that failed the required state biology test that was necessary for graduation? They contact our state legislators and get them to put a two year moratorium on the requirement, till 2017. That way the parents are happy and Johnny and Suzie can go to a college that many are not academically prepared for. The two year delay should give Olympia time to water down the test so that more students can pass the test. This makes the school look good, the parents should... Full story

  • Spiders are not our friends

    Sandra Weigand|Updated Aug 6, 2015

This article is written to help with man’s endless pursuit to understand woman. Several days ago, during the blazing hot sizzle of mid-summer, Mark and I were in Spokane shopping at Costco. Costco was unusually busy that day. We parked in the back forty and hiked the blistering blacktop, aware that the soothing cool of the air-conditioned store awaited us just ahead. There we bravely maneuvered through aisles filled with crazed shoppers who deftly operated their weapon-carts in a frenzy of shopping mania. At least that was M...

  • The VET Act would ensure every veteran’s access to highest level of emergency care

    Updated Aug 6, 2015

No one should ever hang up on a veteran seeking medical assistance. Every veteran deserves to be treated with respect and dignity—and especially with urgency in an emergency medical situation. Proper treatment for our veterans reflects the honor our nation accords for their service in uniform. Anything less is simply unacceptable, and even shameful. Earlier this year, a 64-year-old Army veteran from Kennewick, Donald Siefken, arrived outside the Seattle Veterans Administration hospital emergency room with a broken and s...

  • Inmate college scholarships shine light on mounting student debt

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Aug 6, 2015

The Obama Administration announced it will begin providing Pell grants to federal prisoners, effectively overturning a 1994 ban on the practice. While overturning the ban requires Congressional action, the administration is circumventing Congress by designating the plan a “pilot program.” If allowed to stand, the administration’s unauthorized action would be costly to taxpayers. From 1972-95, before Congress issued the ban, inmates received $34.6 million a year in Pell grants. Under the new pilot, prisoners will recei...

  • Change for Change Sake

    Dale Anderson|Updated Aug 6, 2015

I think most baseball fans understand the importance of July 31. That date is the trade deadline where teams that are in the playoff hunt look for help to win ballgames in the last two months of the season. Trades can and will be made after this date, but not as easily as they are prior to July 31. For baseball teams, this is a very significant part of the season. You may hear the trades that some teams make talked about as fire sales where high priced veterans get traded for...
