My horse Chinook, my “official pooper scoopers;” Kierstin Witt and Aaliyah Yaeger, and I participated in the Springdale Parade and Rodeo on July 21. We placed third out of about eight other rodeo queens. I did a rodeo run, and Kierstin and Aaliyah participated in the stick horse race during the rodeo as well, with Kierstin winning first. A preseason meeting for high school fall sports is being held on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Gilson Gymnasium. Parents and athletes involved in football, volleyball and cheerleading are encouraged to attend. The Wheat Land Communities’ Fair is fast approaching and so is the deadline for 4-H record books. Members entering 4-H record books need to have them turned in by 4 p.m., on Aug. 15 to the Washington State University (WSU) Extension office, in the Adams County Courthouse located at 210 West Broadway in Ritzville. The Ritzville American Association of University Women (AAUW) donated over $1,400 in Scholastic dollars to the Ritzville Public Library and the Ritzville School District. The group raised the funds during the book sale at the annual AAUW Holiday Bazaar that is held in December. To date, the library has purchased 92 books and used $600.57 of the donated money. With school starting at the end of the month, Sterling Bank is starting the annual Backpack for Kids drive. The drive lasts for two weeks, beginning Friday, Aug. 3, and continuing until Friday, Aug. 17. The mid-August end to the drive allows Sterling Bank employees assemble the items and deliver to the students, prior to the start of school on Monday, Aug. 27. A public forum to discuss the draft resolution about the proposed creation of an aquifer protection area brought community members and representatives in front of the county commissioners on Monday, July 30. During the regular school board meeting on Monday, July 23, the Lind and Ritzville school boards unanimously approved a capital levy to be put on the November general election ballot. The funds received from the levy are going to be combined with funds raised by the Project 56 committee to complete the all-weather track at Ritzville High School. Crews from Adams County Fire Protection District No. 1 responded to a field and wheat fire along State Route 261 at Presnell earlier today. The Washtucna Junior High students in seventh and eighth grade received second semester honors for their academic achievements. Honor roll students who maintained at 3-3.49 GPA are Jazlynn Webb, Brittany Gordon, Garrett Correll, Nicole Harder and Kaylee Pavone. The Hungry Hound Barbecue team (HHB), comprised of Lind locals, Cody Kulm, Dustin Micheals and Mark Thorne, recently came home with two high honors from the Cheney Jubilee Barbecue Cook-Off competition. The competition, held on July 14 and 15 in Cheney, brought together 25 teams from all over Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho. Daniel “Dan” William Sullivan passed away on Thursday, July 12 at Life Care Center in Lewiston, Idaho at the age of 88. He was born February 20, 1924, to George E. and Hazel (Long) Sullivan on the farm near Washtucna. He graduated from Washtucna High School in 1942 and entered the United States Army in 1943 and served until 1946, during which time he served in Europe as one of General Patton’s drivers. Albert Ellsworth Seaton II, passed away at the age of 71, on Saturday, July 29, at his home in Ritzville after a hard fought battle with metastatic colon cancer. He was born in Seattle on October 25, 1940, to Albert and Mary Seaton. He was the oldest child and is survived by John Seaton, Ed Seaton and Marriane Eldevick. Wallace (Wally) Taylor passed away on Tuesday, July 24, at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue at the age of 87. He was born on May 23, 1925, in Kootenai, Idaho, to Rev. Wallace T.
