    Tessa Jantz, Distinguished Young Woman of Ritzville, is competing the Washington State Distinguished Young Women Program in Pullman on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Beasley Coliseum.   • Ritzville City Council approves moratorium on cannabis businesses

    The Ritzville City Council had a meeting Tuesday, July 19 to discuss any new business since their last meeting, along with department updates. The meeting began with a presentation of a new ordinance regarding a temporary moratorium on any new Cannabis Based Business in the City of Ritzville. The temporary moratorium prohibits the production, processing and retail sales of recreational and medicinal marijuana for a six-month period.     Over this past week, the Eastern Adams County Fire Departments responded to two major fires resulting in the loss of two combines. The loss of the combines served as a tragedy to farmers due to what is suppose to be a very successful harvest this year.     Ritzville resident Molly Schmidt celebrated her 111th birthday on July 22. This monumental occasion also marked the opportunity to celebrate her not only as Ritzville’s longest living resident, but also the state of Washington’s oldest citizen. Schmidt became the oldest citizen in the state after the passing of Emma Otis of Poulsbo in October of 2015. Otis was 114 years old.     Colonel Scott A. Sprenger retired from the United States Air Force after serving for 27 years and 10 months.     Irene Olson died peacefully at home on July 25, with family by her side. Irene was born in Wapato, Washington on Sept. 3, 1931.
